Primary 5 Maths: Mixed Fraction Multiplication and Division — Tutor Lesson Plan

Primary 5 Maths: Mixed Fraction Multiplication and Division — Tutor Lesson Plan

  • 2026-10-27

Separately they are fine; mixed together students lose the order and forget the flip. This lesson does one thing: turn every division into multiplication first.

Objectives — the student can explain why mixed multiply/divide is worked left to right, rewrite a whole chain as multiplication, simplify once, and handle brackets and mixed numbers.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Multiplying fractions 3/4 × 8/9 2/3, simplified first
Reciprocal Reciprocal of 5/6 6/5
Mixed to improper 2 1/3 7/3

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-5 min Context Ask: 3/4 kg used by 2/3, how much is left? Estimate, then write the plan
5-15 min Chain Show 2/3 × 4/5 ÷ 8/15 rewritten as all multiplication Copy the rewrite
15-25 min Brackets Show 2/3 × (3/4 ÷ 1/2) Try one similar question
25-35 min Practice Set the three questions in section 05 Work alone
35-42 min Fix errors Board the order mistake Name their own error
42-45 min Exit check Three questions, marked at once Finish alone

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Division cannot move

In 2/3 × 4/5 ÷ 8/15 you may not do the division first: the answer changes.
Multiply and divide are worked left to right, one step at a time.

Repeat: “Left to right; the division cannot jump.”

Scene 2: Rewrite everything as multiplication

Do not flip while calculating, you will miss one. First rewrite: 2/3 × 4/5 × 15/8.
Then simplify once and multiply.

Student writes the full rewrite before touching the numbers.

Scene 3: Brackets and mixed numbers first

2/3 × (3/4 ÷ 1/2): brackets first, 3/4 × 2/1 = 3/2, then × 2/3 = 1.
Any mixed number becomes an improper fraction before anything else.

Remind: finish inside the brackets, then multiply outwards.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Chain 2/3 × 4/5 ÷ 8/15 All multiplication, simplify once 1
Brackets 2/3 × (3/4 ÷ 1/2) Brackets first 1
Mixed numbers 1 1/2 × 2/5 ÷ 3/4 3/2 × 2/5 = 3/5, then × 4/3 4/5
Sanity check (teach this): Estimate first: 2/3 × 4/5 ÷ 8/15 should be a bit more than 2/3 because you divide by a number below 1.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
2/3 × 4/5 ÷ 8/15 1 Were all divisions rewritten?
3/4 ÷ 9/8 × 2/3 4/9 Left-to-right order
(1 1/2 × 2/5) ÷ 3/4 4/5 Brackets and mixed numbers handled

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
No flip 2/3 × 4/5 × 8/15 Only the fraction after the sign flips.
Wrong order doing the division first Left to right, every time.
Brackets ignored 2/3 × 3/4 ÷ 1/2 Brackets have priority.
Simplifying across terms cancelling 2 with 8 in different fractions Cancel within one fraction, or across the multiplication line.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
5/6 × 3/10 ÷ 1/4 1 All right: move to word problems
7/8 ÷ 7/16 2 One wrong: 5-minute flip drill
2/3 × (3/4 ÷ 1/2) 1 Two wrong: repeat scene 2

09 Tutor FAQ

Must every step be rewritten?

Yes in this unit. One line of multiplication allows one simplification and cuts errors sharply.

Can I skip the prerequisite check?

No. Most errors come from simplifying and flipping, not from multiplication.

Which word problems?

Only “used a fraction of it” here; the rest belongs to the fraction word-problem lesson.
