Primary 5 Maths: Simple Equations — Practice Paper 3 (10 Questions)

Paper 3 raises the one-step numbers to two digits, uses shapes such as 4x + 9 and 6x − 15, and adds “four times a number plus 7”. Check every answer by substitution.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 25 minutes. Items 01 to 04 are one-step equations, items 05 to 07 are two-step equations, items 08 and 09 form an equation from words, item 10 targets dividing before clearing the subtraction.

  1. FoundationSolve: x + 25 = 60
  2. FoundationSolve: x − 18 = 42
  3. FoundationSolve: 8x = 96
  4. FoundationSolve: x ÷ 7 = 9
  5. IntermediateSolve: 4x + 9 = 57
  6. IntermediateSolve: 6x − 15 = 45
  7. IntermediateSolve: 5x + 8 = 43
  8. ChallengeMing takes $x to buy 6 notebooks at $12 each and has $28 left. Write “let x be …”, then an equation, and find x.
  9. ChallengeFour times a number plus 7 equals 51. Let the number be x, form an equation and find x.
  10. Error redoSolve: 5x − 12 = 28 (common slip: dividing by 5 first and writing x − 12 = 5.6)

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 x = 35 Subtract 25 from both sides: x = 60 − 25 = 35, and 35 + 25 = 60 checks it.
2 x = 60 Add 18 to both sides: x = 42 + 18 = 60, and 60 − 18 = 42 checks it.
3 x = 12 8x is eight x, so divide both sides by 8: x = 96 ÷ 8 = 12, and 8 × 12 = 96 checks it.
4 x = 63 x is divided by 7, so multiply both sides by 7: x = 9 × 7 = 63, and 63 ÷ 7 = 9 checks it.
5 x = 12 Subtract 9 from both sides for 4x = 48, then divide by 4 for x = 12; 4 × 12 + 9 = 57.
6 x = 10 Add 15 to both sides for 6x = 60, then divide by 6 for x = 10; 6 × 10 − 15 = 45.
7 x = 7 Subtract 8 from both sides for 5x = 35, then divide by 5 for x = 7; 5 × 7 + 8 = 43.
8 6 books cost $72, so x = 100 Six notebooks cost 6 × 12 = $72, and taking that from the money he brought leaves 28: x − 72 = 28, so adding 72 gives x = 100.
9 4x + 7 = 51, so x = 11 “Four times plus 7” becomes 4x + 7: subtract 7 for 4x = 44, divide by 4 for x = 11; 4 × 11 + 7 = 51.
10 x = 8 5x − 12 is one quantity, so clear the −12 before dividing: add 12 for 5x = 40, then divide by 5 for x = 8; 5 × 8 − 12 = 28.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
