Primary 5 Maths: Volume of Cuboids and Cubes — 10 Practice Questions with Answers

Most lost marks in volume questions come from units, not multiplication: cm³, m³ and litres are mixed up, or surface area is given instead of volume. Every item here requires a unit.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 25 minutes. Items 03, 04 and 07 work backwards to a height or edge, and item 06 needs a litre conversion; mark after finishing everything.

  9. ChallengeA cuboid 10 cm by 6 cm by 4 cm is cut entirely into 2 cm cubes. What is the largest number of cubes?
  10. Error redoA cuboid is 7 cm long, 3 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume. (common slip: giving surface area instead)

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 72 cm³ Length × width × height.
2 125 cm³ All three edges are equal: 5 × 5 × 5.
3 3 cm Height = volume ÷ (length × width) = 120 ÷ 40.
4 4 cm Find the number that gives 64 when cubed.
5 0.24 m³ Multiply step by step: 1.2 × 0.5 = 0.6, then × 0.4.
6 60 L Volume is 60,000 cm³, then ÷ 1000 to get litres.
7 1.6 m Height = volume ÷ base area, since base area already covers length × width.
8 96 cm² Surface area covers six faces: 6 × 4 × 4, which is not the volume.
9 30 cubes Each direction gives 5, 3 and 2 pieces; multiply to 30, after checking each divides exactly.
10 42 cm³ 7 × 3 × 2 = 42 in cubic centimetres; surface area would be in square centimetres.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
