Primary 5 Maths: Volume of Cuboids and Cubes — Practice Paper 3 (10 Questions)

Paper 3 puts units first: telling cm² from cm³ removes a whole class of lost marks. It also adds 1 m³ = 1000 L and finding water depth from a known volume.

Quick answer 10 questions, about 25 minutes. Items 06 to 08 involve litres, cubic metres and cutting, and item 10 checks the unit only; mark after finishing.

  1. FoundationA cuboid is 15 cm long, 4 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
  2. FoundationA cube has edges of 9 cm. Find its volume.
  3. FoundationA cuboid has base area 36 cm² and height 7 cm. Find its volume.
  4. FoundationA container holds 2500 cm³. How many litres is that?
  5. IntermediateA cuboid has volume 480 cm³, length 12 cm and width 8 cm. Find its height.
  6. IntermediateA tank is 50 cm long, 30 cm wide and 20 cm high, filled to 3/4 of its height. How many litres of water?
  7. IntermediateA cube-shaped tank has edges of 1.5 m. How many litres can it hold?
  8. ChallengeA cuboid 10 cm by 7 cm by 6 cm is cut entirely into 2 cm cubes. What is the largest number of cubes?
  9. ChallengeA tank is 40 cm long and 25 cm wide and already holds 18 L of water. How deep is the water?
  10. Error redoA cuboid is 6 cm long, 4 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume — cm² or cm³? (common slip: right number, wrong unit)

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 360 cm³ Length × width × height = 15 × 4 × 6, with unit cm³.
2 729 cm³ 9 × 9 × 9 = 729; all three edges are equal.
3 252 cm³ The base area already stands for length × width, so multiply by the height only.
4 2.5 L 1 L = 1000 cm³, so divide by 1000.
5 5 cm Height = volume ÷ (length × width) = 480 ÷ 96.
6 22.5 L Full capacity 30,000 cm³; × 3/4 gives 22,500 cm³, then ÷ 1000.
7 3375.0 L Volume is 3.375 m³; 1 m³ = 1000 L, so 3375 L.
8 45 cubes 10 ÷ 2 = 5, 7 ÷ 2 = 3 with 1 left, 6 ÷ 2 = 3, so 5 × 3 × 3 = 45; the leftover 1 cm cannot make a full cube.
9 18 cm 18 L = 18,000 cm³; depth = 18,000 ÷ (40 × 25) = 18.
10 72 cm³ Volume is three-dimensional, so always cm³; cm² is only for area.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
