Primary 6 Maths: Speed — Practice Paper 1 (10 Questions)

Paper 1 works the speed formula in three directions: speed from distance and time, distance from speed and time, time from distance and speed; then km/h into m/s, decimal hours and clock times, the average speed of a two-leg trip, and the error of writing 30 minutes as 0.3 hour.

Quick answer Ten questions, about 20 minutes. Items 01 to 03 cover the three forms of the speed formula; items 04 to 06 cover unit conversion, a decimal time and seconds into minutes; items 07 to 09 cover average speed, a clock-time journey and time back from distance; item 10 redoes the 0.3-hour slip.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 60 km/h Speed = distance ÷ time, so 120 ÷ 2 = 60 km/h.
2 60 m Distance = speed × time, so 4 × 15 = 60 m; seconds match seconds, so no conversion.
3 5 m/s 450 ÷ 90 = 5 m/s.
4 25 m/s 90 km is 90 000 m and 1 hour is 3 600 s, so 90 000 ÷ 3 600 = 25 m/s.
5 280 km 80 × 3.5 = 280 km, and 3.5 hours is 3 hours 30 minutes.
6 1 000 s, which is 16 min 40 s 1 500 ÷ 1.5 = 1 000 s, and 1 000 ÷ 60 = 16 remainder 40.
7 48 km/h Total distance 240 km over 2 + 3 = 5 hours gives 48 km/h; averaging 60 and 40 to 50 is wrong.
8 70 km/h From 08:15 to 09:45 is 90 minutes, or 1.5 hours, so 105 ÷ 1.5 = 70 km/h.
9 20 seconds Time = distance ÷ speed, so 500 ÷ 25 = 20 s.
10 6 km/h; 30 minutes was written as 0.3 hour 30 minutes is 0.5 hour, so 3 ÷ 0.5 = 6 km/h; using 3 ÷ 0.3 gives 10, treating minutes as a decimal.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
