Primary 6 Maths: Speed — Practice Paper 4 (10 Questions)
Paper 4 concentrates on conversion and average speed: the three basic formulas first, then m/s against km/h, an arrival time, a two-leg average, laps and a tunnel, and finally the km/h-read-as-m/s slip.
Quick answer Ten questions, about 25 minutes. Items 01 to 03 use the basic speed formulas; items 04 to 06 convert units and find an arrival time; items 07 to 09 cover a two-leg average, laps and a tunnel; item 10 redoes the km/h and m/s mix-up.

- ChallengeThe outward trip of 150 km takes 2 hours and the return trip of 150 km takes 3 hours. What is the average speed for the whole journey?
- ChallengeA running track is 400 m round. How long does 5 laps take at 4 m/s, in seconds and in minutes?
- ChallengeA 100 m long train passes through a 300 m tunnel at 20 m/s. How long from the front entering to the back leaving?

03 Answers and one-line notes
| # | Answer | One-line note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 60 km/h | Speed = distance ÷ time = 180 ÷ 3 = 60 km/h. |
| 2 | 260 km | Distance = speed × time = 65 × 4 = 260 km. |
| 3 | 15 m/s | Speed = 900 ÷ 60 = 15 m/s; seconds and metres must match. |
| 4 | 64.8 km/h | 18 m each second is 18 × 3 600 = 64 800 m an hour, which is 64.8 km. |
| 5 | 15 m/s | 54 000 m in 3 600 s gives 15 m/s; dividing by 3.6 gives the same answer. |
| 6 | It takes 6 hours and arrives at 14:30 | Time = 480 ÷ 80 = 6 hours, and 08:30 plus 6 hours is 14:30. |
| 7 | 60 km/h | Total 300 km in 5 hours gives 60 km/h; averaging 75 and 50 would be wrong. |
| 8 | 2 000 m, which takes 500 seconds, or 8 minutes 20 seconds | 5 × 400 = 2 000 m; 2 000 ÷ 4 = 500 s, which is 8 minutes 20 seconds. |
| 9 | 20 seconds | The train must cover 100 + 300 = 400 m, and 400 ÷ 20 = 20 seconds. |
| 10 | 20 m/s; the kilometres and hours were never converted | 72 km/h = 72 000 m ÷ 3 600 s = 20 m/s; a km/h figure is always 3.6 times the m/s figure. |
04 What to do after marking
- After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
- Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
- Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
