Surface Area — Practice Paper 1 (10 items with answers)

Surface area is the sum of the six faces (or five for an open box). These ten items move from direct substitution to working back to an edge or height, and end with the error of a missing face.

Direct answer Surface area = 2 × (lw + lh + wh); an open-top box has only one base.

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 96 cm² Six faces of 4 × 4 = 16 cm² each, so 16 × 6 = 96 cm².
2 62 cm² 2 × (15 + 10 + 6) = 62 cm².
3 600 cm² 10 × 10 × 6 = 600 cm².
4 184 cm² 2 × (40 + 32 + 20) = 184 cm².
5 296 cm² Base 12 × 8 = 96, front and back 2 × 60, sides 2 × 40, giving 296 cm².
6 4 cm One face is 96 ÷ 6 = 16 cm², so the edge is 4 cm.
7 4 cm 2 × (15 + 5h + 3h) = 94, so 15 + 8h = 47 and h = 4 cm.
8 4 times The area goes from 54 cm² to 216 cm², and 216 ÷ 54 = 4.
9 4320 cm² Each cube is 6 × 6 × 6 = 216 cm², so 20 × 216 = 4320 cm².
10 148 cm² 2 × (24 + 30 + 20) = 148 cm²; the top and bottom faces must not be left out.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
