Primary Chinese: Explanatory Writing — Tutor Lesson Plan (structure, five methods)

  • 2026-10-28

Explanatory writing usually becomes I really like it. The single rule to hold: no feelings, only features, functions and examples.

Objectives — the student can write an introduction-body-conclusion piece, use two of the five explanation methods per paragraph, and remove every sentence about personal feelings.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Question analysis Circle what the task asks you to write Circle introduce or explain
Paragraphing What are the three parts? Opening, body, closing
Punctuation Using a colon correctly A colon introduces the list

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-8 min What it is Features only, no feelings Judge two paragraphs

18-28 min Structure Introduction, body, conclusion Order the paragraphs
28-38 min Writing An 80-character paragraph Work alone
38-42 min Correction Delete feelings, add examples Rewrite two sentences

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: No I think in explanatory writing

The purpose is to help a reader understand an object.
This cup is lovely and I like it is a feeling; this cup holds 500 millilitres and keeps drinks warm for six hours is explanation.
Same object, completely different writing.

Student judges which of two paragraphs explains.

Scene 2: Two methods per paragraph is plenty

Numbers, examples, comparison, classification, definition.
A paragraph using numbers and an example already scores well.
Accuracy matters more than quantity.

Student adds numbers and an example to one paragraph.

Scene 3: One feature per paragraph, in a sensible order

Opening: what the object is. Body: appearance, then function, then how to use it. Closing: one summary sentence.
Order runs from concrete to abstract, simple to complex.

Note: never pack three features into one paragraph.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Add a method the school bag is heavy Use numbers The bag with books weighs about 3 kilograms
Delete feelings I think it is useful State a fact instead It has three compartments
Order paragraphs appearance, function, use Concrete to abstract Appearance, function, use
Add an example this plant is drought tolerant Give one example A cactus survives weeks without water
Sanity check (teach this): An explanatory paragraph should contain no lovely, I like or I think; if it does, the genre has slipped.
