Primary Chinese: Punctuation and Measure Words — Tutor Lesson Plan

Primary Chinese: Punctuation and Measure Words — Tutor Lesson Plan

  • 2026-10-27

Punctuation marks pauses and relationships, not decoration. Four marks plus measure-word pairing covers a whole year of primary questions.

Objectives — the student can use commas, list commas, quotation marks and book-title marks correctly, explain the difference between the last two, and pair common nouns with the right measure word.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Sentence sense What does a sentence need? A subject and a predicate
Reading aloud Pause where the sentence pauses Pauses in the right places
Nouns Name five nouns People, objects, places

02 Lesson flow (40 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-5 min Pauses Read one sentence two ways Say which reading makes sense
5-15 min Four marks Comma, list comma, quotation, book title Write one example of each
15-25 min Measure words A horse, a tree, a shower Match ten pairs
25-33 min Add punctuation Give an unpunctuated passage Punctuate and read it back
33-37 min Fix errors Board a book title in quotation marks Correct it
37-40 min Exit check Three questions marked at once Finish alone

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Punctuation marks pauses

The same three words become a statement, a question or an exclamation depending on the mark.
Read the sentence first and place the mark where the voice stops.

Student reads before punctuating, not after.

Scene 2: Quotation marks and book titles differ

Quotation marks hold speech or a highlighted phrase: he said, “I will come tomorrow”.
Book-title marks hold the name of a book, article or song.
They are never interchangeable.

Student punctuates one title and one spoken line correctly.

Scene 3: Measure words belong to nouns

Horses take pi, trees take ke, showers take chang, paper takes zhang, fish take tiao.
A wrong measure word makes the sentence sound foreign and costs marks.

Note: the generic measure word is a safe fallback in speech, but exams want the right one.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Add marks An unpunctuated passage Read, then mark By meaning
Quotation he said I will come tomorrow Marks around the speech Correctly quoted
Book title I read Journey to the West Title marks around the name Correctly marked
Measure word one ( ) horse, one ( ) tree pi, ke Matched to the noun
Sanity check (teach this): The number of full stops should match the number of complete sentences; three sentences need three end marks.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Punctuate: he said I will be late today Marks around the quoted speech Where the quotation opens
One ( ) shower chang Pairing
Which marks for a book title? Book-title marks Not quotation marks

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Book titles in quotation marks title inside speech marks Titles take book-title marks.
Only one quotation mark opening mark with no close Marks come in pairs.
Commas where full stops belong one full stop for a whole passage Complete sentences end.
Wrong measure word one tiao horse Horses take pi.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
Which marks for a book title? Book-title marks All right: move to rhetoric
One ( ) tree ke One wrong: re-teach measure words
