Primary English: Fiction Reading Comprehension — Tutor Lesson Plan

Primary English: Fiction Reading Comprehension — Tutor Lesson Plan

  • 2026-10-27

Students answer from impression. Three steps fix it: skim for the skeleton, go back for evidence, answer in a full sentence.

Objectives — the student can skim for characters, place and event, point to the words that support each answer, and answer in a full sentence.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Vocabulary Read five common adjectives Correct
Scanning Circle the name in a paragraph Correct
Full sentences Turn “Because he was late.” into a full sentence Subject and verb

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-8 min Skim Read only the first and last paragraphs State the gist
8-18 min Detail questions Go back for key words Answer three and underline
18-28 min Inference Why did he do that? Find evidence first
28-36 min Answer form Full sentences, quote a phrase Rewrite two answers
36-42 min Fix errors Board a one-word answer Expand it
42-45 min Exit check Three questions marked at once Finish alone

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Skim first

Read the first and last paragraph and find the names.
Ten seconds gives you who the story is about and what happens.

Student gives a one-sentence summary.

Scene 2: Every answer needs evidence

Why did Tom run? Because the text says he heard a scream.
Point at the words, then write the answer.

Student underlines the evidence.

Scene 3: Answer in full sentences

“Because he was scared” is not enough when the question says full sentence.
Write: He ran because he was scared by the scream.

Warn: a one-word answer scores zero when a sentence is required.

09 Tutor FAQ

Pre-teach vocabulary?

Explain words in context; finding evidence matters more.

Students read slowly.

Practise skimming; do not require word-by-word understanding first.

May they copy?

One phrase, yes; a whole paragraph earns nothing.
