Primary General Studies: Media and Information Literacy — Tutor Lesson Plan

Primary General Studies: Media and Information Literacy — Tutor Lesson Plan

  • 2026-10-28

Pupils know how to use the internet; they do not know how to check it. Three moves: find the source, compare a second source, ask who benefits.

Objectives — the student can test a message with three checks, name three pieces of personal data never to post, and write a workable screen-time rule.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Reading Find the source of a paragraph Title or web address
Sorting Tell fact from opinion Checkability
Time How many minutes in two hours? 120

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-8 min Why check One example of a false story Name one consequence
8-18 min Three checks Source, comparison, motive Test one message
18-28 min Privacy Three things never to post Sort ten items
28-38 min Screen time Write rules Three rules
38-42 min Correction Headline only, blind sharing Fix two sentences
42-45 min Exit check Three questions marked Finish alone

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: False stories win on the headline

A headline says shocking, while the body carries no evidence.
Check for a source, a date and an author.
No source means no share.

Student checks a forwarded message for a source.

Scene 2: Three checks in order

Who wrote it and when; whether a second outlet reports it; what the writer wants you to believe or buy.
All three are needed before repeating a claim.

Student applies the three checks to one message.

Scene 3: Privacy and screen time need concrete rules

Never post: home address, school and class, ID numbers, passwords.
Screen time: homework first, no screens an hour before bed, use a timer.
A rule must name a time and a limit.

Note: a rule that cannot be followed is not a rule.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Checking a forwarded message Source, comparison, motive Three-step verdict
Privacy an online form Which fields are optional Address and school
Screen time two hours a day Write three rules Specific times
Judging headline against body Clickbait Not trustworthy
Sanity check (teach this): A verdict needs a reason; saying fake without comparing sources is not checking.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
The three checks Source, comparison, motive All three
Three things never to post Address, school class, passwords Concrete
How should a screen rule read? With times and limits Workable

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Headline only never reads the body Read before judging.
Blind sharing no source check Three checks.
Posting school class thinks it is harmless It locates the child.
Vague rules says use it less Name times and minutes.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
The three checks Source, comparison, motive All right: move to community
Three things never to post Address, school, passwords One wrong: re-teach
How should rules read? Specific times Two wrong: repeat scene 3
