Primary General Studies: People and the Environment — Tutor Lesson Plan
- 2026-10-27
This chapter tempts students into slogans. Replace “we must protect the earth” with a chain: this action, that effect, therefore this step.
Objectives — the student can tell weather from climate, sort renewable from non-renewable resources, and give a conservation action with a cause-and-effect reason.
01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)
If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.
| Skill | Quick check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Local geography | Name two features of Hong Kong weather | Specific |
| Resources | Name three resources you use daily | Water, electricity, paper |
| Charts | Read the highest and lowest value | Reads the axis |
02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)
| Time | Stage | Tutor does | Student does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-8 min | Weather and climate | Compare today with the yearly pattern | Say the difference |
| 8-18 min | Resource types | Renewable against non-renewable | Sort ten items |
| 18-28 min | Effect chain | Electricity, generation, emissions | Build one chain |
| 28-38 min | Actions | Write an action with a reason | Two actions |
| 38-42 min | Fix errors | Board “protect the earth” | Rewrite as a chain |
| 42-45 min | Exit check | Three questions marked at once | Finish alone |
03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Weather is today, climate is the pattern
Rain today is weather; hot, wet summers in Hong Kong are climate.
One looks at a day, the other at many years averaged.
One looks at a day, the other at many years averaged.
Student gives one weather sentence and one climate sentence.
Scene 2: Resources come in two kinds
Solar, wind and water renew themselves; coal, oil and gas do not.
Without that sort, “save energy” has no reason behind it.
Without that sort, “save energy” has no reason behind it.
Student sorts ten items with reasons.
Scene 3: Turn slogans into chains
Not “we must be green”.
Instead: air conditioning uses electricity; generating electricity burns fuel; that adds emissions; so set the air conditioner to 25 degrees.
Action, effect, step.
Instead: air conditioning uses electricity; generating electricity burns fuel; that adds emissions; so set the air conditioner to 25 degrees.
Action, effect, step.
Note: every action needs its reason.
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distinguish | Rain today: weather or climate? | Weather | Short term |
| Sort | Is coal renewable? | Non-renewable | Runs out |
| Cause | Why save electricity? | Action, effect, therefore | By task |
| Chart | Which year had the highest emissions? | Read the axis | From the chart |
Sanity check (teach this): An answer needs a cause; “it is very important” earns nothing.
05 Independent practice (3 questions)
| Question | Answer | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Name one renewable resource | Solar power | Renews itself |
| Write one action with a reason | By task | Chain present |
| Read the highest year on the chart | From the chart | Axis read |
06 Common mistakes and what to say
| Mistake | Student writes | Say this |
|---|---|---|
| Slogan answer | “protect the earth” | Name the action and its effect. |
| Weather and climate mixed | today treated as climate | One is short, one is long. |
| Resources guessed | coal called renewable | If it runs out, it is not renewable. |
| Chart read by eye | guesses the value | Read the scale. |
07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)
- Primary 5 General Studies paper — Part B, questions 4 to 6 (people and the environment)
08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)
| Question | Answer | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Weather against climate | Short term against long-term average | All right: move to science |
| Coal is which kind? | Non-renewable | One wrong: re-teach sorting |
| How many parts in a cause answer? | Action, effect, step | Two wrong: repeat scene 3 |
09 Tutor FAQ
Memorise figures?
Two or three key numbers are enough; the reasoning matters.
Is politics involved?
No; keep to everyday actions and environmental effects.
How can parents help?
Read an electricity bill together; it beats ten lectures.
