S2 Chinese | Narrative Six Elements, Narrative Order and Character Description Prep Guide (for tutors) | A 600-character essay in 60 minutes

  • 2026-11-06

S2 students finish their narrative essays but rarely score well, and the reason is seldom style: one or two of the six elements are missing, the timeline contradicts itself, and the whole piece runs on feeling words such as happy or nervous with no action behind them.

Objectives — Students can: (1) complete an outline with all six elements (time, place, characters, cause, events, result) and state the point of the essay in one sentence; (2) distinguish chronological order, flashback and inserted memory, and explain what a flashback opening achieves; (3) describe one character with at least three of the five methods, each carried by a concrete action.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Complete sentences Write because and so in one sentence Cause and effect clear, subject not repeated
Punctuation Which quotation marks go inside quotation marks Single inside double
Paragraphing How many paragraphs for 600 characters Five to seven, with an opening and a closing paragraph

02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-5 min Read the question Circle the three keywords: character, event, feeling Circle them and say the task aloud
5-10 min Six-element outline Model a six-box table with real clock times Fill in their own table and repair empty boxes
10-18 min Openings Model a chronological opening and a flashback opening Write one sentence of each and compare
18-48 min Three body paragraphs Ten minutes each, one event per paragraph, model the five methods Write about 150 characters per paragraph and label the method
48-55 min Closing in 60 characters Model returning from the event to the feeling, no slogan Write a 60-character ending
55-60 min Proofread Check timeline, pronouns and punctuation with a checklist Read their own essay aloud once

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Six elements and the timeline

The six elements are not a form to fill in for the teacher, they are a checklist against holes: time, place, characters, cause, events, result. Miss one and the reader asks when or who.
Write real clock times into the outline, for example 3 pm at the school gate, 4 pm in the library, 5 pm at home. With three fixed points the narrative cannot jump backwards by accident.
For 600 characters the working frame is 80 for the opening, 460 for the body and 60 for the closing. The body splits into three paragraphs of about 150 characters, one event each, which is the most reliable skeleton at S2.

Students do: fill the six boxes and write three concrete times into the time box.

Scene 2: Order of narration

Chronological order runs from start to finish. A flashback opens at the result or the tensest moment and then returns to the past. An inserted memory interrupts chronological narration and must return to the original timeline afterwards.
A flashback creates suspense, so its first sentence must be a picture, for example I stood outside the staff room and the paper in my hand was already crumpled, not this is an unforgettable experience.
An inserted memory always needs a marker such as I remembered, that year, or only later did I learn. Without a marker the reader thinks the timeline broke, and that is the most common structural deduction.

Students explain: why a flashback opening shows a picture instead of a comment.

Scene 3: Description and the closing

The five methods are appearance, speech, action, thought and expression. S2 students default to thought, so the essay becomes a list of I was nervous.
The repair is one action in place of one adjective: instead of I was nervous, write I turned my admission slip over three times and still could not find the seat number. One concrete action beats three adjectives.
The closing should move from the event back to the feeling in at most one sentence of reflection. Avoid slogans such as this taught me to be honest, because nothing earlier supports them and the ending reads as fake.

Students do: rewrite I was nervous as one action plus one facial expression.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Six-element grid Fill the grid from a short passage Take characters, time and place sentence by sentence, then cause and result All six boxes, one consistent timeline
Flashback function Name the technique in the opening and its effect Identify the order first, then answer suspense or emphasis Technique plus effect, one sentence each
Description analysis Name the method used in a quoted sentence Decide whether it shows appearance, speech, action, thought or expression Method name plus evidence from the text
Closing function Explain how the closing relates to the theme Check whether it echoes the opening or completes the six elements Echo of the opening, or deepened theme
Sanity check (teach this): In chronological narration time only moves forward, so a reference to last week after this afternoon means the timeline broke. A flashback is used once; two or more turns the essay into confusion. An inserted memory always carries a marker, otherwise it is an error rather than a technique. A character paragraph built only from adjectives usually earns no description marks.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Six-box grid Fill the six elements from a 200-character passage Check the cause box is not left empty
Adjective to action Rewrite I was happy as an action Check the result is an action, not another adjective
Insert a memory Add a 60-character memory inside chronological narration Check the marker and the return to the timeline

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Adjectives only I was very nervous and very scared I am deleting both words. Tell me what your hands were doing.
Broken timeline Evening in one paragraph, sunrise in the next Put your three outline times on the table and read them in order.
Flashback in name only Opening with this was unforgettable, then starting from the beginning That is a comment, not a flashback. The first sentence must be a picture.
Slogan ending This taught me that honesty matters Which sentence of your essay mentions honesty? If none, do not invent it at the end.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
Name the six elements Time, place, characters, cause, events, result Missing two or more means act one again
One requirement for an inserted memory A marker, and a return to the timeline Answering just add a memory means act two again
Rewrite I was nervous One action plus one facial expression Still an adjective means act three again

09 Tutor FAQ

Should S2 teach reflective writing too?

Secure narrative first. Narrative is the base of every genre, and without the six elements reflective writing collapses into slogans.

How many events in 600 characters?

One or two. Three body paragraphs on three moments of one event is tighter than three separate events.

Is first person allowed?

Allowed, and recommended at S2, because thought and feeling are easier to make credible.
