DSE Chinese: Paper 3 Listening and Integrated Skills — Tutor Lesson Plan

DSE Chinese: Paper 3 Listening and Integrated Skills — Tutor Lesson Plan

  • 2026-10-27

Paper 3 tests accurate listening and written Chinese, not memory. The commonest loss is copying spoken Cantonese straight into the answer.

Objectives — the student can mark task requirements before playback, record stance and reasons, and merge three sources in written Chinese.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Task verbs State against explain State lists points; explain adds reasons
Genres Letter against report Salutation against headings
Written Chinese Convert spoken forms Use standard written forms

02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-12 min Before playback Mark the task verb on each question Mark one task
12-30 min Note stance Support, oppose, reasons, numbers Take notes live
30-46 min Merge sources Role of each of the three texts Write one paragraph
46-54 min Written Chinese Remove colloquial forms Rewrite one passage
54-57 min Checking Word count, genre, characters Self-check
57-60 min Exit check Three tasks marked Finish alone

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: The task verb sets the length

State means list the points; explain means add reasons; comment means take a stance with two reasons.
Write the verb beside each question before the recording starts.

Student labels the three tasks by requirement.

Scene 2: Record stance and reasons, not just content

Recordings often carry two or three speakers with opposing views.
Notes go in columns: for, against, reason one, reason two.
Numbers and proper nouns must be copied exactly.

Note: words such as however or actually usually introduce the key point.

Scene 3: Integration needs every source in written Chinese

Typically one text gives background, one data and one opinion.
Take at least one point from each and rewrite in written Chinese rather than copying speech.
Genre rules apply: letters need salutation and closing, reports need headings.

Student rewrites one spoken sentence into written Chinese.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
State list two reasons Bullet points, no explanation Two short lines
Explain benefits of a measure Add because and therefore Two explained points
Integration three sources One point from each Merged paragraph
Comment do you agree Stance plus two reasons Stance first
Sanity check (teach this): Integration marks scale with the number of sources: using one of three caps the score at about a third.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Does state require explanation No Points only
How many points from three sources At least one each By source count
Written form of a spoken phrase Standard written Chinese Remove colloquial forms

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Colloquial forms in the answer copies spoken Cantonese Rewrite in written Chinese.
Using a single source low integration marks Use all sources.
Task verb ignored writes an essay for state Match length to the verb.
Missing salutation letter without closing Check the genre.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
Does state need explanation No All right: move to Paper 4
Points from three sources One each at least One wrong: re-teach
Handling spoken forms Rewrite in written Chinese Two wrong: repeat scene 3

09 Tutor FAQ

Not for Paper 3; Paper 1 needs them.
