S4 Chinese, DSE Paper 1 Modern Reading, Paper 4: comparing paragraphs and timing
Ten review items on comparing paragraphs, spotting the thread, evidence for attitude, two layers in an object title, speech description, contrast and climax, plus 36 minutes by marks and 75 characters a minute.
Focus Compare both sides before linking; the thread is repetition; attitude shows in evaluative words; a title carries two layers; speech reveals character; contrast names both sides; a climax sits after the pivot; a middle paragraph does not sum up.

03 Answers and one-line notes
| # | Answer | One-line note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Deal with each paragraph in turn, state its own job, then say how the two relate | A comparison needs both parts before the link; one side alone is half an answer. |
| 2 | Something repeated that strings the whole piece together: an object, a person or a feeling | Finding the thread means spotting repetition, especially repetition that changes as it goes. |
| 3 | The evaluative wording and tone of the narration, words such as surprisingly or at last | Plot shows what happened; evaluative wording shows whose side the writer takes. |
| 4 | The literal object in the story, and a deeper feeling or theme attached to it | A title answer needs both layers; the literal reading alone misses the depth. |
| 5 | Speech description, which reveals character and situation | Speech works with tone and action; one line alone carries little weight. |
| 6 | Contrast, used to throw the change and the effort into relief | A contrast answer must name both sides and say what is thrown into relief. |
| 7 | On the second half: the part after but carries the point | The not merely but pattern climbs, so the second item carries the meaning. |
| 8 | 36 minutes | 90 times 24 over 60 is 36 minutes, so time follows the marks on offer. |
| 9 | 75 characters per minute | 1 500 divided by 20 is 75, and going slower means the reading method needs changing. |
| 10 | A middle paragraph links what comes before and after; the closing paragraph is what draws things together | Name the position first: a middle paragraph receives and opens, only the last one sums up. |
04 What to do after marking
- After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
- Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
- Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
