DSE Chinese: Modern Text Reading (Paper 1) — Tutor Lesson Plan
- 2026-10-27
Understanding the passage is not enough. Four question types, one action each, and the answers stop wandering.
Objectives — the student can state the main idea in one sentence, name a technique with its effect, and analyse a character with textual evidence.
01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)
If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.
| Skill | Quick check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Paragraph function | State what each paragraph does | Can label them |
| Techniques | Recognise symbol and contrast | Correctly |
| Summary | One-sentence summary | Under 30 characters |
02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)
| Time | Stage | Tutor does | Student does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-8 min | Read the questions first | What is being asked | Label the question type |

| 20-34 min | Technique and effect | Symbol, contrast, repetition | One example each |
| 34-48 min | Character analysis | Trait plus evidence | Write one answer |
| 48-56 min | Answer format | Point by point, quote | Rewrite an answer |
| 56-60 min | Exit check | Three questions marked | Finish alone |
03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Main idea is not a summary
The main idea says what the writer argues, not what happens.
Pattern: through an event, the writer expresses a feeling or a lesson.
Over forty characters usually means retelling.

Over forty characters usually means retelling.
Student writes one main-idea sentence and counts it.
Scene 2: Technique needs an effect
Naming a symbol is only a label. Say what it symbolises and what that makes clearer.
The effect must connect to the main idea, not to beauty.
The effect must connect to the main idea, not to beauty.
Student writes two sentences of effect.
Scene 3: Character analysis needs quotation
Trait, then the action or line that shows it, then the inference.
For example: he is devoted, because he visits the hospital after work every day.
For example: he is devoted, because he visits the hospital after work every day.
Note: every trait needs a quotation.
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main idea | What is the passage about? | Through … expresses … | One sentence |
| Technique | Which technique is used here? | Technique plus effect | Linked to the idea |
| Character | Analyse the character | Trait, evidence, inference | Three parts |
| Paragraph role | What does paragraph three do? | Content plus structural role | Two layers |
Sanity check (teach this): Every answer must be locatable in the text; an answer without a quotation is usually an impression.
