DSE Chinese: Classical Chinese (Paper 1) — Tutor Lesson Plan
- 2026-10-27
Students fear classical Chinese because they look up every character. Four inference routes replace the dictionary.
Objectives — the student can infer meaning from parallelism, word class, context and set phrases, translate a line smoothly, and state the main idea with the technique used.
01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)
If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.
| Skill | Quick check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Common function words | Two uses of the possessive particle | Possessive and pronoun |
| Sentence parts | Identify subject and predicate | Correctly |
| Modern paraphrase | Rewrite a line in modern Chinese | Fluent |
02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)
| Time | Stage | Tutor does | Student does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-8 min | Read aloud | Mark pauses, read twice | Read once |
| 8-24 min | Four routes | Parallelism, word class, context, set phrases | Infer eight characters |
| 24-38 min | Translation | One classical line, one modern line | Three lines |
| 38-52 min | Main idea and effect | Idea plus technique plus effect | One answer |
| 52-57 min | Answer format | Point by point | Rewrite an answer |
| 57-60 min | Exit check | Three questions marked at once | Finish alone |
03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Four routes, no dictionary
Parallelism: matching positions in paired clauses carry related or opposite meanings.
Word class: decide whether the character acts as a noun, verb or adjective here.
Context: the surrounding clauses share a register. Set phrases: modern idioms reveal older senses.

Student infers one character by each route.
Scene 2: Translate for fluency, not word by word
Word-by-word translation produces unreadable half-classical sentences.
Translate subject, verb and object first, then add modifiers, then read it back.
Translate subject, verb and object first, then add modifiers, then read it back.
Note: dropping a function word is better than an unreadable sentence.
Scene 3: Main idea and technique are two layers
Layer one: what the writer argues, in one sentence.
Layer two: the technique, such as contrast or reasoning through example, and why it strengthens the idea.

Student writes idea, technique and effect.
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Word meaning | Explain the marked character | Four routes | By text |
| Translation | Render the line in modern Chinese | Subject, verb, object first | Fluent modern line |
| Main idea | What is the writer arguing? | One sentence | By text |
| Technique | Why does the writer include this? | Technique plus effect | By text |
Sanity check (teach this): A translation must read like modern Chinese; if it needs a second explanation in your head, it is unfinished.
05 Independent practice (3 questions)
| Question | Answer | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Infer the marked character from parallelism | By text | Route named |
| Translate one line | By text | Fluent |
| State the main idea in one sentence | By text | One sentence only |
06 Common mistakes and what to say
| Mistake | Student writes | Say this |
|---|---|---|
| Word-by-word translation | half classical output | Translate by sentence parts. |
| One sense per character | same gloss every time | Use context and word class. |
| Main idea written as a summary | retells the story | The main idea states the argument. |
| Technique without effect | “it uses contrast” | Say what the contrast achieves. |
07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)
- Secondary chapter index — Use the three questions on this page
08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)
| Question | Answer | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The four inference routes | Parallelism, word class, context, set phrases | All right: move to Paper 2 |
| How many layers in an effect answer | Idea, technique, effect | One wrong: re-teach |
| First step in translation | Subject, verb, object | Two wrong: repeat scene 2 |
