S4 English: DSE Paper 1 Reading (Paper 1)

Ten original items built on DSE Paper 1 reading skills: scanning, guessing meaning from context, paragraph main idea and pronoun reference in the basic section; then drawing inference from action details, judging the writer tone, and working out that sixty words is a quarter of two hundred and forty; the challenge items test the meaning of meticulous and the function of an opening question, and the paper closes with the common error of copying a sentence instead of explaining purpose.

Direct answer Identify the question type first: scan for details, return to key words for tone and purpose, and use context clues for word meaning instead of memorising definitions.

# Answer One-line note
1 Scanning Scanning is for locating specific details such as dates and numbers; skimming is for the general idea.
2 Unwilling Reluctant means unwilling, and it is followed by to plus a verb.
3 The library opening hours and borrowing rules All three short sentences describe the library opening hours and its borrowing rules.
4 Their lunch The pronoun points back to the nearest matching noun phrase, which is their own lunch.
5 He was anxious and waiting impatiently Repeatedly checking a watch and pacing are action details that suggest anxiety and waiting.
6 Disapproving The word Sadly carries an evaluation, so the tone is disapproving rather than neutral.
7 25% Sixty divided by two hundred and forty is zero point two five, so the summary is a quarter of the original.
8 Very careful about detail Meticulous means extremely careful about details; it does not mean rushed or careless.
9 To engage readers and lead into the topic An opening question is used to engage readers and introduce the topic, not to ask for a real answer.
10 Copying does not explain the purpose; a better answer states that the storm creates the problem the villagers must face The question asks for the purpose, so copying repeats content instead of explaining how the storm sets up the later conflict.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
