DSE English: Paper 1 Reading — Tutor Lesson Plan (question types, locating, inference)
- 2026-10-27
Paper 1 is not “understand and answer”; it is locate by question type. Four types, one action each.

03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Classify before answering
Detail: find the sentence with the same meaning. Inference: find evidence, then take one step.
Meaning: read the sentence before and after. Tone: hunt adjectives and contrast words.
One action per type, not one method for all four.
Meaning: read the sentence before and after. Tone: hunt adjectives and contrast words.
One action per type, not one method for all four.
Student labels the type before writing.
Scene 2: Locating works by paraphrase
The question says “expensive” but the passage may say “costly” or “not affordable”.
Look for the same meaning, not the same word.
Look for the same meaning, not the same word.
Student circles the keyword, then the matching line.
Scene 3: Inference takes two steps
Step one: quote what the text says. Step two: say what the writer implies.
With only step two, it is a guess.
With only step two, it is a guess.
Note: every inference answer needs a quote or a line number.
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detail | According to paragraph 2 … | Locate the paraphrase | Rewrite in a full sentence |
| Inference | What can be inferred …? | Evidence then inference | Quote plus conclusion |
| Meaning | What does “costly” mean? | Read the surrounding sentences | English explanation |
| Tone | What is the writer tone? | Adjectives and contrast words | Adjective plus evidence |
Sanity check (teach this): Every answer must be locatable; if you cannot point at a line, it came from memory.
05 Independent practice (3 questions)
| Question | Answer | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Locate the line behind “not affordable” | Quote it | Paraphrase, not the same word |
| Infer the writer attitude | Quote plus conclusion | Both steps |
| Explain “costly” | Expensive | In English |
06 Common mistakes and what to say
| Mistake | Student writes | Say this |
|---|---|---|
| One method for four types | everything treated as detail | Classify first. |
| Searching the exact word | only finds “expensive” | Search the paraphrase. |
| Inference without a quote | conclusion only | Quote, then infer. |
| Copying a whole paragraph | three lines copied | Rewrite as one sentence. |
