S4 English: DSE Paper 1 Reading (Paper 2)
Ten items on reading between the lines: four basic questions on the hint inside an action verb, the purpose of skimming, pronoun reference and the meaning of excluding; three advanced items on ironic tone, inferring impatience from actions, the summary ratio of eighty to three hundred and twenty words and spotting a topic sentence; a challenge item on the meaning of substantial; and an error-repair item on answering a why question with a paragraph number.
Direct answer Most marks are lost on question type rather than vocabulary: cause for why questions, irony for tone questions and context clues for word meaning.

03 Answers and one-line notes
| # | Answer | One-line note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | It was very long | Stretch literally means to pull out, so here it shows the queue was extremely long. |
| 2 | Skimming | Skimming gives the gist quickly so you can decide whether the notice matters; scanning only hunts for single details. |
| 3 | The tennis racket | It refers back to the nearest object, the tennis racket; the match is a later event and cannot be what was forgotten. |
| 4 | Members under eighteen | Excluding marks an exception, so members younger than eighteen are not covered. |
| 5 | Sarcastic | Calling a three-hour loss brilliant is irony, so the tone is sarcastic rather than praising. |
| 6 | She was impatient | Checking the clock repeatedly and tapping a foot are action clues for impatience. |
| 7 | 25.0% | Eighty divided by three hundred and twenty is nought point two five, so a quarter of the original. |
| 8 | The benefits of recycling at school | The first sentence is the topic sentence and the three points simply support it. |
| 9 | Large in amount | Substantial describes the size of the increase, meaning considerable rather than material. |
| 10 | It points to a location instead of giving the reason; a better answer states the cause in your own words | A why question needs a cause, and naming a paragraph gives none, so state the reason in your own words. |
04 What to do after marking
- After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
- Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
- Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
