S4 English: DSE Paper 1 Reading (Paper 3)

Ten fresh items: four basic questions on scanning for a single fact, the concession signalled by although, an ambiguous pronoun and the picture built by narrowed; three advanced items on irony from praise plus absurd contrast, inferring emotion from silence and the ratio of a ninety-word summary to a four-hundred-and-fifty-word passage (20.0%); two challenge items on how however sets a paragraph direction and the meaning of modest; and an error-repair item on copying the passage instead of inferring.

Direct answer Three question types cost most marks: tone (check whether praise is flipped), inference (state the implication) and ratio (fix the numerator and denominator first).

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 Scanning When you need one specific fact, scanning jumps straight to the target instead of reading everything.
2 A contrast between the result and the praise Although introduces a concession, so the defeat and the praise pull in opposite directions.
3 The pronoun she is ambiguous She could refer to Anna or to her sister, so the reference is unclear.
4 The path became very narrow Narrowing plus barely passing shows the path was too tight for two people.
5 Sarcastic Praising a single page for a four-hour workshop is ironic, so the tone is sarcastic.
6 He was shocked or deeply affected Reading twice and staying silent are action clues for being shocked.
7 20.0% Ninety divided by four hundred and fifty is zero point two, so one fifth of the original.
8 The drawbacks of recycling However flips the direction and hidden costs points to negatives, so the paragraph covers drawbacks.
9 Small in amount Modest describes the size of the rise, meaning slight rather than humble.
10 Copying repeats the text instead of stating the inference; a better answer says what the text implies in your own words An inference question asks what the text implies, and copying proves no inference was made.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
