DSE English | Mixed conditionals – tutor prep guide | Four patterns, two-clause test, four common mistakes
- 2026-11-04
Students can recite if plus past, would plus base, and still write nonsense the moment the two halves point at different times. The fix is not another formula; it is one question asked twice: what time is each clause in?
01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)
If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.
| Skill | Quick check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Tense names | What tense is had finished? | Past perfect |
| Verb forms | Past form of go and be | went, was, were |
| Clause order | Can the if-clause come second? | Yes, and then no comma |
02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)
| Time | Stage | Tutor does | Student does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-6 min | Two-clause warm-up | Show one sentence, ask which clause is real and which is imagined | Label both clauses |
| 6-20 min | Four patterns | Build a four-row table: time, if-clause, result, example | Fill one example each |
| 20-32 min | Mixed conditionals | Split a past cause from a present result on two lines | Rewrite one third conditional as mixed |
| 32-44 min | Two-clause test | Check each clause time separately, then compare | Mark time on both clauses |
| 44-56 min | Exam tasks | Gap fill, transformation, error correction in one pass | Do one of each, self-mark |
| 56-60 min | Exit check | Collect three items, mark at once | Work alone |
03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Build the table before the rules
Once time is spoken, the tense stops being a formula and becomes a choice, which is exactly what the exam tests.
Ask the student to say the time frame aloud for all four examples before writing anything.
Scene 2: Mixed conditionals: two decisions, not one
Contrast the pair: If I had studied harder, I would be at university now (past cause, present result) against If I were taller, I would have played centre (present state, past result). Same vocabulary, opposite direction, and students who skip the two-line step invert them under pressure.
Ask the student to write the time of each clause above it before writing the sentence.
Scene 3: The two-clause test as a marking tool
The test also catches the half-correct transformation, where a student repairs one clause and leaves the other, and once drilled it takes under thirty seconds, which is what makes it usable in an exam.
Ask the student to mark P, N or F above each clause in three sentences and say which are mixed.
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gap fill | If she ___ (know), she would have called. | Time test first, then form | had known – past, unreal |
| Transformation | Rewrite a third conditional as mixed | Change only the time of the result clause | Keep past perfect, result becomes would plus base |
| Error correction | One wrong tense per sentence | Test each clause separately | Fix only the clause whose time disagrees |
| Short writing | Two sentences about one real decision | One plain, one mixed, label both times | Verbs match the labelled times |
05 Independent practice (3 questions)
| Question | Answer | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Time labelling | Mark P, N or F on both clauses of three sentences | Whether the result clause gets labelled at all |
| Mixed rewrite | Repair If I had saved money, I bought a car | Whether only one half is changed |
| Error hunt | Find and fix the wrong tense in three items | Whether the meaning survives the fix |
06 Common mistakes and what to say
| Mistake | Student writes | Say this |
|---|---|---|
| Second and third mixed at random | If I would have known, I would tell you | Say the time of each clause out loud. Past or now? Two answers, then pick the form. |
| Only the if-clause repaired | Result clause still in the wrong tense | You changed the cause. What time is the result? Change that half too. |
| would inside the if-clause | If I would study harder | Would never goes in the if-clause. Move it to the result and try again. |
| Plain conditional called mixed | Both clauses point to last year | Both halves point to last year, so this is third conditional. Where is your second time? |

- Prep guides index — Matching chapters in other subjects
- Redo this chapter — Write five mixed sentences and label both times
08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)
| Question | Answer | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Four patterns | Zero, first, second, third | Missing one = back to act one |
| What makes a sentence mixed | The two clauses sit in different times | Saying longer sentence = repeat act two |
| Two-clause test order | If-clause time, result time, compare | Cannot state it = back to act three |
09 Tutor FAQ
Do students need the grammar names?
Names help marking and self-correction, but the time test does the work; teach both and lean on the test.
How many patterns for a weaker student?
Second and third first, since transformation items lean on them; add mixed once both are stable.
Is the comma rule worth teaching?
One minute, not a lesson: comma when the if-clause comes first, none when it comes second.
