DSE English: Paper 3 Listening and Integrated Skills — Tutor Lesson Plan
- 2026-10-27
Paper 3 is not won by listening harder but by copying accurately. Students should know what to copy before the recording starts.
Objectives — the student can mark keywords before playback, keep symbol-based notes, and merge sources within the required format and word limit.
01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)
If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.
| Skill | Quick check | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|
| Question analysis | Fact against opinion | Facts can be checked |
| Format | Report against letter | Headings against salutation |
| Word limits | What does no more than three words mean? | Three words at most |
02 Lesson flow (60 minutes)
| Time | Stage | Tutor does | Student does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0-12 min | Before playback | Mark keywords and part of speech | Mark one task |
| 12-30 min | Note-taking | Symbols, abbreviations, arrows | Take notes live |
| 30-46 min | Merging sources | Combine the key points of two texts | Write one paragraph |
| 46-54 min | Format and limits | Match the genre, trim extra words | Trim one answer |
| 54-57 min | Checking | Spelling, tense, word count | Self-check |
| 57-60 min | Exit check | Three tasks marked | Finish alone |
03 Teaching script (read it out)
Scene 1: Read the questions before the recording
Circle the keywords and note the expected part of speech beside each one.
Then you listen for one piece of information instead of following the whole text.
Then you listen for one piece of information instead of following the whole text.
Student marks keywords and parts of speech for three questions.
Scene 2: Notes use symbols, not sentences
Arrows for cause and effect, up and down arrows for change, standard abbreviations.
Notes hold keywords; only the answer needs full sentences.
The recording plays once, so speed beats neatness.

Note: write ugly notes rather than stop to tidy them.
Scene 3: Merging means using every source
Usually one text gives background and another gives data or opinion; the answer must combine both.
The genre decides headings, salutation and closing.
Word limits are hard caps and cost marks when exceeded.

Word limits are hard caps and cost marks when exceeded.
Student checks whether both sources appear in the answer.
04 Question types and worked steps
| Type | Example | Steps | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form filling | a number and a place | Copy only the needed field | No full sentences |
| Short answer | no more than three words | Count words, not letters | Three at most |
| Integrated writing | two sources | Background plus data | Both used |
| Format | a report | Heading, paragraphs, formal tone | No salutation |
Sanity check (teach this): Count words one by one: articles and prepositions count, and contractions count as one word.
05 Independent practice (3 questions)
| Question | Answer | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| How many words for no more than three words | Three | Count each word |
| Does a report need a salutation | No | Reports use headings |
| Should notes be full sentences | No | Keywords only |
06 Common mistakes and what to say
| Mistake | Student writes | Say this |
|---|---|---|
| Writing sentences while listening | misses the second half | Use symbols. |
| Using one source only | loses integration marks | Cite both. |
| Exceeding the word limit | adds decoration | Write the core, then trim. |
| Wrong genre | a report written as an email | Check the task wording. |
07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)
- Secondary English chapter index — Use the three tasks on this page
08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

|---|---|---|
| Counting words in a limit | Count every word | All right: move to Paper 4 |

| What notes should contain | Keywords and symbols | Two wrong: repeat scene 2 |
