S4 Geography: Map Skills Paper 1 (Scale and Distance)

This paper focuses on scale conversion: map length to ground distance, ground distance back to map length, and how enlarging a copy changes the measurement.

Quick answer 1. 400 m | 2. 1,750 m (1.75 km) | 3. 8 cm | 4. 5 cm | 5. 10 cm | 6. 1,280 m, 19.2 min | 7. 0.25 km2 | 8. 600 m | 9. 1:500 000 | 10. 400 m

  2. FoundationA 3.5 cm measurement on a 1:50 000 map: what is the ground distance in kilometres?
  3. FoundationA real distance of 2.4 km: how many cm on a 1:30 000 map?
  4. FoundationOn a 1:20 000 map, how many cm is the side of a grid square standing for 1 km?
  5. IntermediateA road is 4 cm on a 1:25 000 map. How long is it on a 1:10 000 map?
  6. IntermediateOn a 1:20 000 map a path measures 6.4 cm. Walking at 4 km/h, how many minutes does it take?
  7. IntermediateOn a 1:50 000 map, what ground area in square kilometres does 1 cm² stand for?
  8. ChallengeA 1:20 000 map is enlarged to 200 percent; two points now measure 6 cm. What is the ground distance?
  9. ChallengeTwo towns are 45 km apart and measure 9 cm on a map. Find the scale.
  10. Error redoA student reads 1:20 000 as 1 cm to 20,000 km and answers 40 km for 2 cm. What is correct?

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 2 cm x 20,000 = 40,000 cm = 400 m. Convert centimetres to metres by dividing by 100.
2 3.5 x 50,000 = 175,000 cm = 1750 m = 1.75 km. Multiply by the scale denominator, then divide by 100,000 for kilometres.
3 2.4 km = 240,000 cm, so 240,000 / 30,000 = 8 cm. Going from ground to map means dividing, after making units match.
4 1 km = 100,000 cm, so 100,000 / 20,000 = 5 cm. The larger the scale, the longer the same ground distance on paper.
5 4 x 25,000 = 100,000 cm = 1000 m; 100,000 / 10,000 = 10 cm. Find the ground length with the first scale, then convert back to paper.
6 6.4 x 20,000 = 128,000 cm = 1280 m; 1.28 / 4 hour = 19.2 minutes. Time is distance divided by speed, then multiply hours by 60.
7 1 cm stands for 500 m, so 500 x 500 = 250,000 m2 = 0.25 km2. Area scales as the square of the length scale.
8 After enlarging, 6 cm equals 3 cm on the original; 3 x 20,000 = 600 m. Reduce back to the original length first; the scale itself is unchanged.
9 45 km = 4,500,000 cm; 4,500,000 / 9 = 500000, so the scale is 1:500000. A scale compares map length with ground length in the same unit.
10 1 cm stands for 200 m, so 2 cm is 400 m, that is 0.4 km. The scale compares centimetres with centimetres; metres come after conversion.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
