S4 Geography: Map Skills Paper 3 (Mixed Application)
This paper mixes scale, gradient, bearings and travel time the way DSE map questions do, with a one-line note on each answer.
Quick answer 1. 800 m | 2. 16 min | 3. 30 m | 4. south-east | 5. 80 m, 10 percent | 6. 6 km, 80 min | 7. 060° | 8. 1,800 m, 5 percent | 9. 8 percent | 10. 12 cm

- FoundationA 4 cm measurement on a 1:20 000 map: what is the ground distance in metres?
- FoundationWalking at 3 km/h, how many minutes are needed for that 800 m path?
- FoundationA 1:8 gradient over 240 m horizontally: what is the height difference?
- FoundationWhich direction does a bearing of 135° indicate?
- IntermediateCamps stand at 100 m, 180 m and 140 m. What is the highest minus lowest, and the gradient from camp A at 100 m to camp B at 180 m over 800 m?
- IntermediateA trail is 12 cm on a 1:50 000 map. At 4.5 km/h, how many minutes does it take?

- ChallengeA peak stands at 480 m and a camp at 320 m, 2 km apart horizontally. What is the gradient in percent?
- Error redoA student works out 3 cm for a 6 km route on a 1:50 000 map by halving the kilometres. What is the correct map length?
03 Answers and one-line notes
| # | Answer | One-line note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 x 20,000 = 80,000 cm = 800 m. | Multiply by the denominator, then divide by 100 for metres. |
| 2 | 0.8 / 3 hour = 16.0 minutes. | Change to kilometres first, then multiply by 60. |
| 3 | 240 / 8 = 30 m. | A 1:8 gradient rises 1 m for every 8 m across. |
| 4 | 135° lies between east at 90° and south at 180°, so it is south-east. | Each quadrant covers 90°, measured clockwise from north. |
| 5 | The largest difference is 180 – 100 = 80 m; the gradient is 80 / 800 x 100 = 10 percent. | Take the highest minus the lowest for range, but only the stated pair for gradient. |
| 6 | 12 x 50,000 = 600,000 cm = 6 km; 6 / 4.5 hour = 80 minutes. | Find the ground length first, then divide by the speed. |
| 7 | 240° – 180° = 060°. | Reverse bearings differ by 180°; subtract when above 180°. |
| 8 | 7.2 x 25,000 = 180,000 cm = 1800 m; 90 / 1,800 x 100 = 5 percent. | Multiply the decimal as a whole number, then shift the point. |
| 9 | The rise is 480 – 320 = 160 m; 160 / 2,000 x 100 = 8 percent. | Two kilometres is 2,000 m, so do not skip the conversion. |
| 10 | 6 km = 600,000 cm, so 600,000 / 50,000 = 12 cm. | Kilometres must become centimetres before dividing by the scale. |
04 What to do after marking
- After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
- Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
- Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
