S4 ICT: Data and Networks – Practice Paper 2 (10 Questions)

Paper 2 finishes the conversions: binary to decimal, hexadecimal, and the storage units, then an uncompressed image size, a transfer time, how many photos fit on a card and a compression percentage, before redoing the error of treating a megabyte as a thousand bytes.

Quick answer Ten items, about eighteen minutes. Items 01 to 04 cover binary, hexadecimal and storage units; items 05 to 07 cover image size, decimal to binary and transfer time; items 08 and 09 cover card capacity and compression; item 10 redoes the megabyte conversion.

  2. FoundationA file is 3.5 MB. How many bytes is that? (1 MB = 1 024 KB, 1 KB = 1 024 bytes)
  3. FoundationWhat is the hexadecimal value 2F in decimal?
  4. FoundationA 4 GB pen drive has to hold a 3 800 MB video. Does it fit, and how much space is left?
  5. IntermediateAn 800 by 600 pixel 8-bit greyscale image: how many KB does it take uncompressed?
  6. IntermediateWrite the decimal 200 as an 8-bit binary number.
  7. IntermediateA 24 MB file travels over an 8 Mbps link. What is the shortest time in seconds?
  8. ChallengeA 16 GB card holds photos of 4.5 MB each. What is the largest number of photos?
  9. ChallengeA 30 MB file compresses to 4.5 MB. What is the compression ratio saved?
  10. Error redoA student writes 512 MB as 512 000 000 bytes. What is the correct value?

03 Answers and one-line notes

# Answer One-line note
1 182 Read the columns right to left as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128, then add the columns holding 1.
2 3,670,016 bytes Multiply by 1 024 twice: 3.5 gives 3 584 KB, then 3 670 016 bytes.
3 47 2 × 16 plus 15 gives 47; F stands for 15, not 16.
4 It fits, with 296 MB left 4 GB is 4 096 MB, and 4 096 minus 3 800 leaves 296 MB.
5 480 000 bytes, that is 468.75 KB 800 × 600 gives 480 000 pixels at one byte each, and dividing by 1 024 gives 468.75 KB.
6 11001000 128 plus 64 plus 8 makes 200, so those three columns carry a 1.
7 24 seconds Turn 24 MB into 192 Mbit first, then divide by 8 Mbps to get 24 seconds.
8 3 640 photos 16 × 1 024 is 16 384 MB, and 16 384 divided by 4.5 is 3 640.9, so only 3 640 whole photos fit.
9 85% Subtract 4.5 from 30, divide by 30 and multiply by 100 to get 85%.
10 536,870,912 bytes Storage units step by 1 024, so 512 × 1 024 × 1 024 gives 536 870 912; stepping by 1 000 is the decimal convention.

04 What to do after marking

  • After marking, redo only the wrong items and write down which step went wrong (formula, unit, or misread number).
  • Repeat the same item two days later; move to the next paper only when both attempts are correct.
  • Parents only need the answer and note columns; there is no need to explain every item.
