DSE Chinese — Classical Word Sense and Word-Class Shift (Tutor Prep Guide) | Three-step routine, context elimination, subject recovery in translation

  • 2026-11-05

Students try senses one by one until the translation reads smoothly. This lesson turns the choice into a routine: label the part of speech, rank core meaning against extended meaning, then delete what the context forbids. It also separates word-class shift from phonetic loan, two things students constantly merge.

Objectives — Students can: (1) state the difference between one word with many senses and a word-class shift, with one example each; (2) apply the three-step routine to 12 high-frequency items, writing the part of speech before the sense; (3) complete a 12-mark gloss set (3 marks per question) and a 60-character translation in 40 minutes, scoring at least 4 of 6.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Function words Give one example each of zhi as pronoun, particle and verb. Pronoun, structural particle, verb of motion — three separate jobs
Sentence parts In min gui zhi, who is the subject and who is the object? Min is subject, zhi is object, the verb is gui
Phonetic loan Is a phonetic loan a slip of the pen or a deliberate borrowing? A deliberate borrow of a same or near-sound character, not a slip

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0–5 min Prior-knowledge check Ask the three warm-up items; write misses on the board Answer orally, copy the misses
5–17 min Act 1: part of speech first Model labelling before choosing a sense Do two items, label first
17–30 min Act 2: context eliminates Place three contexts side by side and delete Delete one sense and justify
30–40 min Act 3: shift versus loan Contrast a noun used as verb with a borrowed character Do one of each with a written verdict
40–43 min Translation and subject recovery Model a 60-character translation with the omitted subject restored Translate once, circle what was added
43–45 min Exit check Ask the three exit items and record who missed Answer orally; misses carried to next lesson

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Act 1: label the job before choosing the meaning

One rule on the board: no label, no meaning. Ask what job the character is doing — subject, object, modifier, or joining two clauses.
Model it with zhi: in min gui zhi it follows a verb and fills the object slot, so it is a pronoun; in baixing zhi kun it sits between two nouns, so it is a structural particle.
Write the three steps: label, rank core against extended, delete what context forbids. Students say each step aloud once.

Ask students to repeat: first what job it does, then what it means.

Scene 2: Act 2: meanings are deleted, not memorised

The same yi can mean with, because, or consider. Students memorise a list and grab the first entry they recall.
Work the other way: look at what follows. A noun after yi usually gives with; a full clause usually gives because; wei plus an object usually gives consider.
Common-misconception box: students think every sense must be memorised. What must be memorised is the pair of part of speech plus what follows it.

Ask students to repeat: senses are deleted, not recited.

Scene 3: Act 3: shift and loan are different animals

A word-class shift keeps the character and changes the job: the noun mu, in mu zhi, works as a verb meaning to stare at.
A phonetic loan changes the character: shuo is borrowed for yue, to be pleased, because the sounds are close.
Common-misconception box: answering a shift with a loan. Verdict line: same character equals shift; different character equals loan.

Ask students to repeat: did the character change? No means shift, yes means loan.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Function-word sense What does yi mean in yi dao pi lang? Label as preposition, check the noun after it, take with with a knife
Word-class shift jun in pei gong jun ba shang Noun army, takes an object here, so verb to be stationed
Phonetic loan shuo in xue er shi xi zhi, bu yi shuo hu Close sound, locate the source character yue, to be pleased
Translation with subject recovery Translate gui er mou zhi in under 60 characters Find the omitted subject, supply it, keep time order He went back and discussed the matter with others
Sanity check (teach this): Before handing in a translation, re-read for three things: the subject, the position of negation, and the order of events. Every sentence needs a verb; two noun-only sentences usually mean a shifted word was missed.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
What does qi mean in qi zhen wu ma ye? Surely — a rhetorical opener Check whether it opens the whole question; students often answer his
What job does zui do in wang wu zui sui? Noun used as verb: to blame Check whether it takes the object sui; an object means a verb
Translate jian xian si qi yan in under 60 characters On seeing a person of worth, think of matching them Check whether yan was wrongly rendered as there

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Sense without part of speech zhi: of First say what job it does, then what it means.
Shift answered as loan mu zhi: loan for look Did the character change? No, so it is a shift, not a loan.
Translation keeps classical order the worthy seen and matching thought Modern English puts the subject first. Who saw? Write it.
Loan named but sentence unexplained shuo is a loan for yue After naming it, add: that is, he felt pleased.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)
