DSE English — Paper 3 Listening and Integrated Skills Guide for Tutors: Data File Selection, Rewriting and Four Common Errors

DSE English — Paper 3 Listening and Integrated Skills Guide for Tutors: Data File Selection, Rewriting and Four Common Errors

  • 2026-11-05

Students hear the recording, read the data file, then copy whole sentences into the answer and run out of words and marks. This lesson gives one repeatable move: decide what to write, then take three items from the file.

Objectives — Students can: (1) take notes in symbols and abbreviations and split 45 minutes into 18 minutes of listening, 7 of planning, 15 of writing and 5 of proofreading; (2) pick three usable items from a data file – a fact, an opinion and a contrast – and explain why the rest is left out; (3) keep a 120-word task within 180 words, knowing that over-length costs 2 marks and gains nothing.

01 Prerequisites (3-minute check)

If any of these fails, fix it before the lesson starts.

Skill Quick check Pass mark
Note speed What do you write when you hear a number and a name? Symbols and abbreviations only, never a full sentence
Paragraph shape What three parts does a body paragraph need? Topic sentence, supporting detail, closing link
Rewriting Give another way to say the price went up. The cost rose, or it became more expensive
Word limits What happens if a 120-word task runs to 180 words? Marks are deducted and no extra content marks are given

02 Lesson flow (45 minutes)

Time Stage Tutor does Student does
0-5 min Prior check Ask about symbols, paragraph parts, one rewrite Answer orally, errors written on the board
5-17 min Act 1: note-making Play one section, model symbol-only notes Take notes, then compare with a partner
17-31 min Act 2: selecting from the data file Model three-colour marking: fact, opinion, contrast Mark one file and say what was chosen
31-41 min Act 3: integrated writing Model joining three points into one paragraph Write an eighty-word version
41-48 min Timed practice Run one 15-mark task on the clock Work alone, then swap and mark
48-53 min Proofread and exit Check words, format, tone Closed-book answers to three questions

03 Teaching script (read it out)

Scene 1: Act 1: note-making is not dictation, it is copying the skeleton

Say the purpose plainly: the listening part does not test spelling, it tests whether you catch what you are meant to write down. So write nouns, verbs and numbers with symbols. An arrow means more or less, a triangle means watch this, a question mark means unclear.
Model it once: the recording says the workshop runs from 9:30 to 11:00 on the second floor, so the note is 0930-1100, 2F, workshop. There are twenty minutes later to turn that into a sentence, and copying extra words only loses the next point.
Add one habit: read the question before the recording starts and circle the key noun. DSE recordings rarely repeat the question word, so if the question says cost, the recording may say how much you have to pay.
Misconception box: students wait until the end to write. Write while listening, even untidily.

Students restate: skeleton only, catch the synonym, never full sentences.

Scene 2: Act 2: the data file is not for using everything, it is for choosing three things

Hand out a three-part data file and forbid writing. Mark it in three ways: facts in one colour, opinions in another, and places where two sources disagree in a third. Then each student says out loud which three items they will use, and the tutor only asks why those three.
The rule is simple: whatever the task asks for decides what you take. If the task is a 120-word letter of suggestion, the principal opinion beats a student comment, because he is the reader. Make this explicit: eight paragraphs in the file does not mean eight in the answer. Using more dilutes the answer and loses marks.
Model the order: purpose first, then two reasons, each reason carried by one fact from the file. Facts mean numbers, dates and places, the evidence a marker can see at a glance.
Misconception box: lifting whole sentences. Integrated tasks test rewriting, so copying loses marks by design.

Students restate: take what the task asks, support with facts, rewrite every source sentence.

Scene 3: Act 3: integrated rewriting has three moves in a fixed order

First, cut: strip every modifier and keep subject, verb, object. Second, swap: change the verb and the pattern, passive for active, action for noun. Third, join: link two sentences with because, which or so that.
Model the whole chain: the school decided to extend the library opening hours because students asked for more study space. Cut to school extend hours. Swap to the school will keep the library open longer. Join with because students need space to study.
Then show the arithmetic of time: 15 minutes for 120 words is about eight words a minute, so a slow writer must plan for two minutes or run out and start padding. Going to 180 words costs 2 marks, so keep the last five minutes for counting.
Finally tone: a letter to the principal needs could, would and suggest, never you must. This costs marks every year, because the content is right and the tone is wrong.
Misconception box: longer is safer. Markers count points, not words.

Students restate: cut, swap, join, then count words.

04 Question types and worked steps

Type Example Steps Answer
Data file selection Eight paragraphs feeding one suggestion letter Circle the task words, mark in three colours, take three items One fact, one opinion, one contrast, inside a 60-mark task
Integrated rewrite Join two source sentences Cut modifiers, swap verbs, add a connector Two points in one sentence, no six-word lift
Listening completion Fill in time, place and price Read first, circle keywords, write symbols Notes like 0930-1100 and 2F only
Timed writing A 120-word letter of suggestion Two minutes of planning, fifteen writing, five checking Between 120 and 180 words
Sanity check (teach this): Sanity checks: the answer must sit inside the word range, because longer is not better. An integrated answer must contain specific facts from the file, or it has drifted off task. Tone is checked against the reader, so the same content can pass or fail depending on who receives it. The four time blocks must add up to the paper limit, so any overrun has to come out of another block.

05 Independent practice (3 questions)

Question Answer What to watch
Mark a three-part file and list the three items you would use. One fact, one opinion, one contrast Can the student justify each choice
Rewrite: the price went up sharply last year. The cost rose a lot in the past year Meaning kept, words changed
Write 120 words of advice using exactly two points. Two points, each with one fact, inside 120 words No lift, no padding

06 Common mistakes and what to say

Mistake Student writes Say this
Copying the source sentence The whole line about extending library hours appears in the answer Rewrite it. A lifted sentence is visible to the marker in one glance; a rewritten one reads as yours.
Writing longer than asked 220 words for a 120-word task Over-length costs 2 marks and earns nothing extra. Stop once the points are covered.
Full sentences while listening Chasing complete grammar and missing the next point Write nouns, verbs, numbers and symbols only. Full sentences are for the writing stage.
Wrong tone You must reply immediately, addressed to the principal Use could, would and suggest for a superior; imperatives belong in notes to friends.

07 Homework (paper, section and question numbers)

  • Redo this chapter — Redo the three tasks and write the word count after the last sentence
  • English chapter index — Open the Paper 2 writing chapter and rewrite five sentences with cut, swap, join
  • Data file drill — Take any three-part file, mark it in three colours, then write one eighty-word summary

08 Exit check (last 5 minutes)

Question Answer Decision
May an integrated answer copy the source? No, it must be rewritten If yes, repeat Act 2
What happens at 180 words for a 120-word task? 2 marks are deducted If no problem, repeat Act 3
How do the 45 minutes split? 18 listening, 7 planning, 15 writing, 5 checking If unsure, repeat Act 1

09 Tutor FAQ

Can notes be in Chinese?

No, answers must be English; symbols are only a private shorthand.

Must every paragraph of the data file be read?

Scan all of it quickly, then use only the three items the task needs.

What if the answer is too short?

Add one fact from the file, never an adjective.
