4. Three things the numbers say
- Sixteen secondary schools is the lowest count in Hong Kong and 9 fewer than the 25 primary schools (-36.0%); outside Tung Chung, Cheung Chau has 3 schools, Tai O 2, Mui Wo 2 and Lamma 1, so the ferry route is the school net.
- Private schools reach 97 (75.2%), the highest of the 18 districts, but 63 are kindergartens; all 3 private independent schools belong to Discovery College in Discovery Bay, which together with Discovery Bay International and Montessori forms a second private cluster outside Tung Chung.
- Aided schools are 26 (20.2%), government 1 (Cheung Chau Government Secondary), direct-subsidy 2 (Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial and YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College); with no ESF school in the district, international curricula mean the private route.
5. Getting around the district
Main MTR stations: Tung Chung and Sunny Bay stations, ferries from Central to Cheung Chau, Mui Wo and Yung Shue Wan, and buses for Tai O. Door-to-door travel between a school and a lesson usually stays under half an hour; when a timetable leaves only one free hour, an online lesson beats crossing stations.
Fix the school station first, then the tutor station, and only then look at travel time: inside one district the difference between stations can reach twenty minutes.
6. Lesson-prep guides that match
Tutoring does not start from nothing. Each guide below names the prior knowledge, a 45 or 60 minute lesson flow, a read-aloud script and an exit check, so tutor and parent can follow one process.
| Resource | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Lesson-prep guides, full index | one page per chapter, with a read-aloud script |
| Primary maths guides | 20 chapters: fractions, area, rate, percentages |
| Primary English guides | 12 chapters: grammar, reading, writing |
| Primary Chinese guides | 12 chapters: comprehension, punctuation, rhetoric |
| Primary general studies guides | 8 chapters: health, environment, science |
| Secondary (DSE) guides | ten subjects, 60-minute chapters mapped to DSE |
| IB guides | maths AA, biology and economics: method and evaluation |
7. Common questions
How many primary and secondary schools are there in Islands?
The EDB data of October 2026 lists 25 primary schools, 16 secondary schools and 63 kindergartens in Islands, 129 schools in total.
How do families on Cheung Chau arrange tutoring?
The ferry to Central takes about 55 minutes, or 35 by fast ferry, so a weekday cross-harbour lesson is impractical; with only one secondary school on the island, most families study online.
Are there single-sex schools in Islands?
None. All 129 schools are co-educational, one of five districts with no single-sex school, alongside Yuen Long, Sai Kung, Tai Po and North.
School data comes from the EDB School Location and Information open data, October 2026 snapshot: school names, type, religion and gender only, with no admission, results or ranking figures. Compiled by the TutorZone team.
