Section B — Reading Comprehension (40 分)

The Lost Puppy

On Saturday morning, Ken and his sister Amy went to the market with their mother. While their mother was buying vegetables, the children saw a small brown puppy sitting beside a fruit stall. It had a red collar but no name tag. The puppy looked hungry, so Amy gave it a piece of bread from her bag.

“We cannot leave it here,” said Ken. “The market is too busy. Someone may step on it.”

The children asked the stall owner, Mr Chan, whether he knew who owned the puppy. Mr Chan shook his head. He said the puppy had been there since eight o’clock. Amy wrote a short note with their telephone number and put it on the wall beside the stall.

Then the children took the puppy to the animal centre near the market. A helper there checked the puppy and said it was about three months old, that is, about 12 weeks, and healthy. She also said they should wait for one week before looking for a new home, because the owner might come back.

On Wednesday evening the telephone rang. A woman called Mrs Wong said she had lost her puppy, Coffee, on Saturday. She described the red collar and the white spot on its left ear. The next morning Mrs Wong came to the animal centre with a photograph. When Coffee saw her, it ran to her at once and jumped into her arms.

Mrs Wong thanked Ken and Amy. “You did the right thing,” she said. “Many people would have walked past.”

導師批改提示

Mark the three content points first — one mark band for each of the three bullet points, then language and organisation. A pupil who writes beautiful English but answers only two points cannot score above 20 out of 30.
Do not punish a different ending — if the puppy is not reunited with its owner in the pupil’s version, that is still a complete answer as long as the three points are covered.
Count the words — about 60 words means 50 to 70. Under 40 words, take 3 marks off the content band.
