Section B — Reading Comprehension (40 分)

Less Waste, More Care — a report by the Green Team

Last month the Green Team, a group of twelve pupils at Sunny Bay Primary School, surveyed the rubbish in the tuck shop area. Every afternoon for one week, two members weighed the waste from the bins and wrote the numbers on a chart.

The results surprised everyone. The table below shows how many kilograms of waste the school threw away each day.

Mr Lau, the teacher in charge, said, “We buy too much and we throw away too much. A paper box, a plastic fork or half a sandwich — it all goes into the same bin.”

The team decided to act. They put labels on the bins: one for paper, one for plastic bottles and one for general waste. They also made posters. On the posters they drew a sea turtle and wrote, “This bag can stay in the sea for 400 years. Can you?” Pupils began to talk about the posters in the playground.

In the second week the team weighed the waste again. The school threw away 90 kilograms, about one quarter less than before. The biggest change was the number of plastic bottles: it fell from 210 to 96 in one week.

The Green Team now checks the bins every Friday. “We are not asking for a perfect school,” said Amy Chan, the team leader. “We are asking everyone to think for one second before throwing something away.”

Check the letter format first — a letter needs a greeting, a clear purpose in the first line, and a closing. Missing greeting or closing: deduct 2 marks from organisation.
One suggestion well explained beats three suggestions with no reasons — the second content point is the reason, not another suggestion.
Watch the word limit — about 80 words means 70 to 90. Letters over 110 words lose 2 marks from organisation, not from content.
