Section B — Reading Comprehension (40 分)
Every year thousands of plastic bottles are left on Hong Kong’s beaches. Last October, 46 pupils from Nam Shan Secondary School joined a clean-up at Shek O. They worked for three hours with gloves, bags and a record sheet.
The group went back to the same beach on four Saturdays. The table shows the number of plastic bottles they collected each time.
The numbers were not what the pupils expected. “We thought the beach would get cleaner because we cleaned it every week,” said Jason, a Form 3 pupil. “Instead we found more bottles each time.”
Miss Ho, the teacher who organised the clean-up, explained that most of the bottles did not come from the people on the beach that day. They had been carried in by the waves from the sea. “The sea is not a bin,” she said. “Whatever we drop in Tsuen Wan can end up in Shek O.”
The pupils recorded where the bottles came from by reading the labels. About one third were local brands, but many came from other places in the region.
The group has now written to the school tuck shop and asked it to stop selling drinks in single-use bottles. They are also planning a poster campaign and a short film for the morning assembly.
“Cleaning a beach is easy for one morning,” said Jason. “The difficult part is not making the mess in the first place.”
| Visit | Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bottles | 480 | 600 | 540 | 660 |
B1. Are the sentences true or false? If a sentence is false, write the correct information. (12 marks)
| # | 題目 | 答案與評分要點 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The pupils cleaned the same beach four times. | True. |
| 2 | The number of bottles fell from Week 1 to Week 4. | False. It rose from 480 to 660 bottles. |
| 3 | Miss Ho said most of the bottles were left by people on the beach that day. | False. She said most of them had been carried in by the waves from the sea. |
| 4 | About one third of the bottles were local brands. | True. |
B2. Answer the questions. Show your working where a calculation is needed. (16 marks)
| # | 題目 | 答案與評分要點 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | How many bottles did the pupils collect in Week 3? | 540 bottles. |
| 2 | What was the total number of bottles collected in the four weeks? | 480 + 600 + 540 + 660 = 2,280 bottles. |
| 3 | What was the average number of bottles per week? | 2,280 ÷ 4 = 570 bottles per week. |
| 4 | By what percentage did the number of bottles rise from Week 1 to Week 4? | (660 − 480) ÷ 480 = 0.375, so the number rose by 37.5 per cent. |
B3. Find a word in the passage that means the same as the words below. (6 marks)
| # | 題目 | 答案與評分要點 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | wrote down information so that it could be used later | recorded |
| 2 | planned and arranged an event | organised |
B4. Answer in two or three sentences. (6 marks)
| # | 題目 | 答案與評分要點 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jason says that the difficult part is not making the mess. Suggest one thing your school could do to use fewer plastic bottles, and explain why it would work. | Model: Our school could install a water fountain and ask pupils to bring their own bottles, because most pupils buy bottled water only when they have nothing to drink from. If the fountain is free and easy to reach, fewer bottles will be bought. (Suggestion 2 marks, reason 3 marks, explanation of why it works 1 mark.) |
Section C — Writing (30 分)
Write an article of about 100 words for your school magazine about the beach clean-up. Use the figures in the table, explain what the pupils learnt, and end with one suggestion for readers.
| 項目 | 分 |
|---|---|
| Content (figures used correctly, lesson, suggestion) | 12 |
| Language (grammar, spelling, range of vocabulary) | 12 |
| Organisation (title, paragraphs, linking words) | 6 |
Bottles Do Not Stay on the Beach Last October, 46 pupils from our school spent three hours cleaning Shek O beach. They went back on four Saturdays and collected 2,280 plastic bottles in total, an average of 570 a week. The number rose from 480 in Week 1 to 660 in Week 4, a rise of 37.5 per cent. The pupils learnt that most of the bottles had been carried in by the waves, not left by people on the beach. The sea brings back what we throw away. Our class now brings its own water bottles, and we hope you will do the same.
導師批改提示
- Figures must be carried over exactly — award the content marks for 2,280 bottles, 570 per week and 37.5 per cent; a pupil who writes “about two thousand” without the total loses one content mark.
- A title is part of organisation — an article without a title cannot score the top band for organisation (6 marks).
- Do not accept a copied table — the task asks for an article, so a pupil who only lists figures scores at most 6 out of 12 for content.
