A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 2: Preparing Financial Statements
- 2026-11-03
Accounting: the chain from entry to statement
Structured accounting answers are marked in three layers: whether the entries and adjustments hold, whether the statement format is complete, and whether the closing analysis returns to the figures given. Most students manage the first two and lose marks on the explanation, or on one missing adjustment that carries the whole statement wrong.

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | 30 multiple-choice questions, 30 marks (22 financial accounting + 8 cost and management) | 30 · 28% AS / 14% A Level | 1 hour |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | four structured questions, 90 marks (Q1 30, Q2-Q3 15 each, Q4 30) | 90 · 72% AS / 36% A Level | 1 h 45 min |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | three structured questions of 25 marks, 75 marks; source material is on a separate insert | 75 · 30% A Level | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | two structured questions of 25 marks, 50 marks; source material is on a separate insert | 50 · 20% A Level | 1 hour |
Paper 2 technique: 90 marks in 1 h 45 min across four questions is about 1 minute 10 seconds per mark. Take question 1 (the 30-mark statements question) first and finish it in 35 minutes, allow about 18 minutes each for questions 2 and 3, and 35 minutes for question 4. Tick off each adjustment as you do it so no accrual, prepayment or depreciation charge is missed.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | concept items first, then ratio and cost calculations | One adjustment missing: depreciation, accruals, prepayments, closing inventory or bad debts half done, so profit and assets are both wrong and every ratio after it is noise. |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | statements first, decisions last | Working skipped: answers written straight onto the statement with no classification or subtotals, so no method marks are available and the error cannot be traced. |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | notes and statements first, evaluation last | Incomplete statement format: no heading, no date, no currency, or assets and liabilities out of their proper order, which costs the presentation marks first. |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | calculations before recommendations | Analysis that only quotes ratios: the figure and the formula, with no cause for the move and no meaning for the business, so the evaluative marks are lost wholesale. |
What is each A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 2 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): concept items first, then ratio and cost calculations; Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting): statements first, decisions last; Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level): notes and statements first, evaluation last; Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level): calculations before recommendations
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: entries and classification. Write the account type on the left of the working before the entry, then prove the balance on a trial balance.\nWeeks 4-6: an adjustment checklist. Depreciation, accruals, prepayments, inventory and bad debts on one card, ticked line by line before every paper is handed in.\nWeeks 7-9: statement format. Heading, date and units fixed before any figure, then re-lay the statement a second way as a check.\nWeeks 10-12: timed papers; redo only the missing-adjustment and analysis-sentence errors.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |

| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | 1 h 30 min | about 30 min per question |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | 1 hour | about 30 min per question |

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustments left out of the income statement | Charging rent of 22,000 as it stands | Eleven months must be restored to a full year of 24,000 | accrual 2,000 |
| Prepayment miscalculated | Charging all 4,800 as an expense | Nine months are used from 1 April | expense 3,600, prepaid 1,200 |
| Full allowance charged | Charging the whole 1,600 | Only the increase, 960 – 600, is charged | expense 360 |
| Reconciliation direction reversed | Adding unpresented cheques | They are deducted from the statement balance | 6,750 |
| Difference between the two costing systems misunderstood | Treating the whole fixed cost as the difference | 2,000 units x $8 = 16,000 in inventory less the 6,000 under-absorption | 10,000 |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: the question and the adjustment missed; the correct entry and the two statement lines it moves; and whether the loss was concept, format or arithmetic. A missed adjustment goes onto the checklist card, since the same handful recur each session.
How many years should you drill?
The 9706 paper structure has been stable and the last five or six sessions cover the main statement-preparation tasks; older papers still serve for entries and adjustments, though some formats and terms have moved with the syllabus, so follow the current guide and note the difference in the log.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 2 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 2 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Which part should be finished first if time runs out?
The body of the statement the question asks for, then the analysis. A flawed body still earns method marks, a blank analysis earns nothing. Three sentences citing figures beat a paragraph that cites none.
How much should the calculator be used?
For checking totals and ratios only, never instead of the working. Every intermediate step is written out, or method marks vanish with the error and the line cannot be found on review.
