A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 4 Drill Guide: Costing, Variances, Decisions
- 2026-11-03
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · A-LEVEL ACCOUNTING 9706 PAPER 4: COSTING, BUDGETING, DECISIONS
Paper 4 covers cost and management accounting: cost classification, job and process costing, standard cost variances, budgets and short-term decisions. Marks rarely go on the formula; they go on choosing the right cost concept, mixing marginal with absorption costing, flipping a variance sign, or loading a decision with fixed cost. This page is method only: where to start on each of the four question types, the check order for a variance statement, how to slice the time, and how to keep the error log.
How is A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 4 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): 30 multiple-choice questions, 30 marks (22 financial accounting + 8 co (30 · 28% AS / 14% A Level); Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting): four structured questions, 90 marks (Q1 30, Q2-Q3 15 each, Q4 30) (90 · 72% AS / 36% A Level); Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level): three structured questions of 25 marks, 75 marks; source material is o (75 · 30% A Level); Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level): two structured questions of 25 marks, 50 marks; source material is on (50 · 20% A Level)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | 30 multiple-choice questions, 30 marks (22 financial accounting + 8 cost and management) | 30 · 28% AS / 14% A Level | 1 hour |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | four structured questions, 90 marks (Q1 30, Q2-Q3 15 each, Q4 30) | 90 · 72% AS / 36% A Level | 1 h 45 min |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | three structured questions of 25 marks, 75 marks; source material is on a separate insert | 75 · 30% A Level | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | two structured questions of 25 marks, 50 marks; source material is on a separate insert | 50 · 20% A Level | 1 hour |
Paper 4 technique: the official paper is two questions in 1 hour, about 30 minutes each; this set adds a third question for extra drilling. Do ABC first (driver rate, overhead per unit, unit cost), then the variance analysis separating price from quantity, and finally investment appraisal: cumulative cash flows for payback, discount factors for NPV, then interpolation between two rates for the IRR.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | concept items first, then ratio and cost calculations | Absorption and marginal costing mixed: asked for contribution, the answer deducts fixed cost first, so every later part inherits the error, including which order to accept |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | statements first, decisions last | Variances given only in total, without the price and usage split, and the favourable or adverse sign flipped in transcription, so the total reconciles while every line is wrong |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | notes and statements first, evaluation last | Only the answer and the conclusion are written, so each marking point is missed. |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | calculations before recommendations | Only the answer and the conclusion are written, so each marking point is missed. |
What is each A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 4 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): concept items first, then ratio and cost calculations; Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting): statements first, decisions last; Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level): notes and statements first, evaluation last; Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level): calculations before recommendations
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks rotating three types: one costing question a week (job or process, with work in progress and normal loss), one variance statement a week, and a decision or budget question a fortnight. Always build the variance table in four columns — standard, actual, variance, favourable or adverse — and total last, never back-solve from a total. From week 10, whole papers timed; in the last fortnight redo only the log items that failed twice on the same concept, and write that concept as your own one-line definition.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) | 1 hour | about 2 min per question |
| Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting) | 1 h 45 min | about 35 min on question 1 |
| Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level) | 1 h 30 min | about 30 min per question |
| Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level) | 1 hour | about 30 min per question |
How should the time be split inside each A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 4 paper?
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice): about 2 min per question; Paper 2 (Fundamentals of Accounting): about 35 min on question 1; Paper 3 (Financial Accounting, A Level): about 30 min per question; Paper 4 (Cost and Management Accounting, A Level): about 30 min per question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrong activity base | Spreading overheads by output volume | Allocate by activity data (set-ups, orders, machine hours) | X $14.80, Y $42.40 |
| Variance signs reversed | Writing an adverse variance as positive | Actual above standard is adverse (negative) | material price 4,000 adverse |
| Sales volume variance using the selling price | Multiplying the volume difference by $70 | Use the standard margin of $21 | 8,400 adverse |
| Payback rounded to a whole year | Answering 3 years | It is recovered part way through year 3, so pro-rate | 2.83 years |
| ARR using the full investment | Average profit / 180,000 | Average investment is cost / 2 | 15.6% |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: concept (marginal, absorption, incremental, opportunity), starting point (the first formula or table the answer needs), sign (how favourable or adverse is decided). Column one drives column two; if you cannot name the concept, the right answer was copied, not earned.
How many years should you drill?
Paper 4 stays within four types — costing, variances, budgets and decisions — so the last five whole papers suffice. The costing formulae have not moved for years, so older papers split by topic are safe to drill.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 4 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Accounting 9706 Paper 4 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
When does a decision question include fixed cost?
Short-term decisions count incremental cost and revenue only; fixed cost enters only when the question says it changes, such as new machinery or an extra supervisor. In practice circle that sentence in every question so the exam version answers itself.
Where does normal loss sit in process costing?
Before equivalent units: deduct the normal loss quantity, then compute equivalent units and unit cost. Reverse the order and both unit cost and work in progress come out high — an error that survives answer-checking.
