TUTORZONE ORIGINAL DRILLING MOCK · CAMBRIDGE A-LEVEL BIOLOGY (9700) PAPER 5
Written to the Cambridge 9700 syllabus: Paper 5 Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, 30 marks, 1 h 15 min (A Level practical skills, AO3; contexts may be outside the syllabus); plus Paper 1 MCQ (40), Paper 2 AS structured (60) and Paper 4 A Level structured (100). This is a Paper 5 drilling mock: 3 questions for 45 marks of practice, with answers and techniques.
What is in A-Level Biology (9700) Paper 5?
Direct answer: Paper 5 Planning, Analysis and Evaluation, 30 marks, 1 h 15 min (A Level practical skills, AO3).

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation) | Planning + analysis, 30 marks | A Level 12% | 1 h 15 min |
| Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions) | Structured questions, 100 marks | A Level 38.5% | 2 hours |
A-Level Biology Paper 5 drilling technique: plans need independent, dependent and controlled variables, sample size and repeats; data work uses rate = amount / time; evaluation covers random (repeats) and systematic (instrument) error. Percentage uncertainty = error / reading x 100%.
How this paper was built
This is a TutorZone original drilling mock: the questions follow the Cambridge 9700 structure (Paper 5, 30 marks) and the answers are our own, not Cambridge past papers or marking references.
Every numeric answer was recomputed programmatically.
Pacing
| Section | Marks | Suggested time | What to do first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation) | A Level 12% | about 37 min per question | variable control + statistical reasoning |
| Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions) | A Level 38.5% | about 12 min per question | AS + A2 content |
How is percentage uncertainty found?
Direct answer: error / reading x 100%; 5.0 cm3 ± 0.1 cm3 gives 2%.
Paper 5: planning and analysis drilling (3 demonstrated)
Plans need the three variable types plus repeats; rate = amount / time.
Question 1 (15 marks)
Plan an experiment into the effect of temperature on enzyme (e.g. amylase) activity and explain the controls.
Question 2 (15 marks)
An experiment produces 4 to 12 cm3 of gas in 8 minutes. Find the mean rate (cm3/min) and evaluate.
Question 3 (15 marks)
A volume reading is 5.0 cm3 with instrument precision ±0.1 cm3. Find the percentage uncertainty and how to reduce it.
What should be controlled in an enzyme experiment?
Direct answer: keep pH, enzyme concentration, substrate concentration and volume constant, changing only temperature (the independent variable).
Paper 5 answers
Question 1
(1) Use water baths at set temperatures (0-60 C) (5). (2) Keep pH, enzyme concentration, substrate concentration and volume constant (5). (3) Measure product at a fixed time (e.g. time for starch to disappear) as the activity measure (5).
Question 2
Rate = (12 – 4) / 8 = 1 cm3/min x 60 = 60 cm3/min (7). Consider repeats, temperature control and checking for leaks (8).
Question 3
Percentage uncertainty = 0.1 / 5.0 x 100% = 2% (7). Reduce it by using a more precise instrument, taking larger readings and repeating (8).
Which topics does this paper drill?
Direct answer: enzyme activity planning, variable control, rate calculation, percentage uncertainty and error evaluation.
Where these marks are usually lost
| Mistake | What it looks like | What it costs | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Missing controls | Temperature only | List pH, concentration and volume as constant | controlled variables |
| Rate without units | Just 1 | Write 60 cm3/min | 60 cm3/min |
| Evaluation without remedy | Error noted only | Suggest repeats and better instruments | repeats + instruments |
How to use this paper
First drill: the full 1 h 15 min on all questions with no references.
Mark it: check the variable controls and rate units.
Second drill: redo three to seven days later, aiming to finish inside 1 hour.
What should I do after drilling this paper?
Direct answer: log answers missing controls or units; redo in three to seven days; and drill Paper 4 structured questions.
