A-Level Business 9609 Paper 3 Drill Guide: Working the Case
- 2026-11-02
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · A-LEVEL BUSINESS PAPER 3: WORKING A CASE STUDY
Paper 3 hands you a long case and several questions, and the marks turn on whether you use the case itself as evidence. Each part should quote the fact from the case, apply one analytical tool, then reach a judgement; an answer that is conceptually right but never cites the case misses the evaluation marks. This page is the drilling method only.

A-Level Business drilling technique: break-even = fixed costs / unit contribution; gross margin = gross profit / revenue; ROCE = net profit / capital employed; current ratio = current assets / current liabilities, with inventory removed for the acid test. Define before calculating in short answers, and always write the evaluation paragraph (AO4) in an essay – listing both sides without a judgement caps the marks.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Business Concepts 1) | define first, then calculate | Theory is written with no reference to the figures, timing or decisions in the case. |
| Paper 2 (Business Concepts 2) | read the data before answering | The calculation gives only the answer, so no method marks are earned. |
| Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making) | link every answer back to the case | The conclusion names a choice but never states what it costs. |
| Paper 4 (Business Strategy) | make a clear judgement | Time goes on the early parts and the final part gets two lines. |
What is each A-Level Business 9609 Paper 3 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Business Concepts 1): define first, then calculate; Paper 2 (Business Concepts 2): read the data before answering; Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making): link every answer back to the case; Paper 4 (Business Strategy): make a clear judgement
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks one to four take one functional area per session, two cases each for marketing, operations, finance and people. Before reading the questions, spend five minutes copying every figure in the case into a table. Weeks five to eight run whole timed papers, forcing an evidence sentence before every analytical sentence. The final four weeks rehearse evaluation only, costing two options in each answer and condensing the tools into one page.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |

| Paper 3 (Business Decision-Making) | 1 h 45 min | allow 25 min for each 16-mark question |
| Paper 4 (Business Strategy) | 1 h 15 min | about 35 min per essay |
How should the time be split inside each A-Level Business 9609 Paper 3 paper?

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answer without working | Write 12,000 units | No method marks | Show unit contribution first |
| Ratio without units or form | Write 2 | It is not identifiable as a ratio | Write 2.0:1 |
| No evaluation paragraph | List both sides only | The AO4 marks are lost | End with a justified judgement |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: question and functional area; the sentence that lost the mark (no citation, no formula, no trade-off); and the fixed wording for next time. Keep the citation openers on one page so they surface under exam pressure.
How many years should you drill?
The 9609 case paper has kept its shape, though the syllabus and assessment objectives have been revised, so aim at eight years: time the last five whole and take only the case sections from older papers. Skip topics no longer in the current syllabus and note why.
How many years of past papers is enough?
The 9609 case paper has kept its shape, though the syllabus and assessment objectives have been revised, so aim at eight years: time the last five whole and take only the case sections from older papers. Skip topics no longer in the current syllabus and note why.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Business 9609 Paper 3 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Business 9609 Paper 3 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Should I read the questions or the case first?
Read the questions first, then go back to the case, because knowing what is asked tells you which figures are worth copying. Reading everything before the questions usually means a second pass, and that is where time goes.
Must an evaluation always state the downside?
Yes. Evaluation marks weight the trade-off, so beyond the reasons for your choice you need its cost, risk or time penalty and the conditions under which the alternative wins.
