Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) 10-12 structured questions, 75 marks 30% A-Level 1 h 50 min
Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) 9-11 structured questions, 75 marks 30% A-Level 1 h 50 min

A-Level Mathematics drilling technique: 10 questions in 1 h 50 min is about 11 minutes each. Differentiate/integrate first then substitute; write the common difference/ratio and nth-term formula for sequences.

02

How this paper was built

This is a TutorZone original drilling mock: the questions follow the Cambridge 9709 structure (Paper 1 Pure Mathematics 1, 75 marks, 30%) and the answers are our own, not Cambridge past papers or marking references.

Every answer was recomputed programmatically.

Note before you start: this is not a Cambridge past paper. Your score is a practice score and cannot be converted into an A-Level grade.

Pacing

Section Marks Suggested time What to do first
Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) 30% A-Level about 11 min per question algebra, coordinate geometry, calculus
Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) 30% A-Level about 12 min per question advanced algebra, trigonometry, calculus

What is d/dx(x^3)?

Direct answer: 3x^2.

04

Paper 1: pure mathematics drilling (10 questions, 75 marks)

Show steps in calculus; write the nth-term formula for sequences.

Question 1 (8 marks)

Solve the quadratic equation 2x^2 + 3x – 5 = 0.

Question 2 (7 marks)

Find the derivative of f(x) = x^3 at x = 2.

Question 3 (8 marks)

Find the radius and centre of the circle x^2 + y^2 = 25.

Question 4 (7 marks)

What is the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence 2, 5, 8, …?

Question 5 (8 marks)

Find the equation of the line through (1, 2) with gradient 3.

Question 6 (8 marks)

Find the integral of (2x + 3) dx.

Question 7 (7 marks)

Solve sin x = 0.5 for 0 <= x <= 360 degrees.

Question 8 (8 marks)

Find the inverse function f^-1(x) of f(x) = 2x + 3.

Question 9 (7 marks)

What is the 5th term of the geometric sequence 3, 6, 12, …?

Question 10 (7 marks)

Find the stationary point(s) (x-coordinates) of f(x) = x^3 – 3x^2.

What is the nth term of an arithmetic sequence?

Direct answer: Tn = a + (n-1)d.

05

Paper 1 answers

Question 1

Factorise (2x + 5)(x – 1) = 0, so x = 1 or -2.5 (8).

Question 2

f'(x) = 3x^2, so f'(2) = 3 x 4 = 12 (7).

Question 3

Centre = (0, 0), radius = sqrt(25) = 5 (8).

Question 4

Common difference d = 3; T10 = 2 + 9×3 = 29 (7).

Question 5

y – 2 = 3(x – 1), so y = 3x – 1 (8).

Question 6

The integral is x^2 + 3x + c (8).

Question 7

x = 30 deg or 150 deg (7).

Question 8

y = 2x + 3 gives x = (y – 3)/2, so f^-1(x) = (x – 3)/2 (8).

Question 9

Common ratio r = 2; T5 = 3 x 2^4 = 48 (7).

Question 10

f'(x) = 3x^2 – 6x = 3x(x – 2) = 0, so x = 0 or 2 (7).

Which topics does this paper drill?

Direct answer: quadratics, differentiation, circles, line equations, integration, trigonometry, inverse functions, arithmetic and geometric sequences.

06

Where these marks are usually lost

Mistake What it looks like What it costs Instead
Quadratic missing root Only x=1 Give both 1 and -2.5 x = 1 or -2.5
Derivative power x^3 as 3x d/dx(x^3)=3x^2 3x^2
AP missing d T10 as 20 Tn = a + (n-1)d 2 + 9×3 = 29
07

How to use this paper

First drill: the full 1 h 50 min on all 10 questions with no references.

Mark it: check calculus steps and sequence formulas.

Second drill: redo three to seven days later, aiming to finish inside 1 h 35 min.

What should I do after drilling this paper?

Direct answer: log questions with wrong derivative powers or sequence formulas; redo in three to seven days; and drill Paper 3 Pure Mathematics 3.

Next step: find a tutor / register as a tutor

After drilling, the hard part is telling a conceptual error from a writing error. Tell us the year group, the school and your available times, and TutorZone will match you with a tutor who knows the HKEAA assessment requirements.

Find a free tutor

Demand for tutors in this subject is steady, and those who can explain the marking scheme and where marks are won are especially sought after. Register free; you pay only when a match succeeds.
