A-Level Mathematics 9709 Paper 4: Forces, Equations and Energy

A-Level Mathematics 9709 Paper 4: Forces, Equations and Energy

  • 2026-11-03

Mathematics: mechanics and the free-body diagram

This paper is mechanics: kinematics, dynamics, energy and momentum. The marks sit in the free-body diagram and the equations, not the final number – one missing force spoils every later line, and a correct diagram with no equation still loses method marks.

How is A-Level Mathematics 9709 Paper 4 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Paper 4 (Mechanics): 6-8 structured questions, 50 marks (50 marks); Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3): 9-11 structured questions, 75 marks (30% A-Level)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 4 (Mechanics) 6-8 structured questions, 50 marks 50 1 h 15 min
Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) 9-11 structured questions, 75 marks 30% A-Level 1 h 50 min

A-Level Mechanics drilling technique: 8 questions in 1 h 15 min. Use v=u+at, F=ma, mgh and 1/2 mv^2, stating units.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 4 (Mechanics) kinematics, dynamics, energy A force is missing or reversed on the diagram, so the equation is wrong from the first line and both method and answer marks go.
Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) complex, logs, calculus The answer appears with no equation, or units change mid-solution with no note, so even a correct value is penalised.

What is each A-Level Mathematics 9709 Paper 4 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Paper 4 (Mechanics): kinematics, dynamics, energy; Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3): complex, logs, calculus

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: kinematics only. Sketch the velocity-time graph, then the three constant-acceleration equations, then label direction and units.
Weeks 4-6: dynamics. Draw the free-body diagram, write each force with magnitude and direction, then F = ma, then check every component.
Weeks 7-9: energy and momentum. Define the system boundary, list the initial and final states, then solve with signs consistent with that boundary.
Weeks 10-12: full papers to time, starting with the two clearest diagrams.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 4 (Mechanics) 1 h 15 min about 9 min per question
Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3) 1 h 50 min about 11 min per question

How should the time be split inside each A-Level Mathematics 9709 Paper 4 paper?

Paper 4 (Mechanics): about 9 min per question; Paper 3 (Pure Mathematics 3): about 11 min per question

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Kinematics formula v = u – at Acceleration: v = u + at v = u + at
Weight/mass mixed Weight as 10 kg Weight is a force in N weight = mg = 100 N
KE missing 1/2 mv^2 KE = 1/2 mv^2 1/2 mv^2
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: the diagram as drawn, the forces and equations the scheme expects (magnitude, direction, F = ma, units), and which force was missing. Put the most frequent omission on page one.

08

How many years should you drill?

The mechanics content and question mix have changed, so older questions do not always match the current paper: build the diagram-and-equation habit on three to five years of current papers, then use the official specimen and school papers.

How many years of past papers is enough?

The mechanics content and question mix have changed, so older questions do not always match the current paper: build the diagram-and-equation habit on three to five years of current papers, then use the official specimen and school papers.

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Mathematics 9709 Paper 4 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Mathematics 9709 Paper 4 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

How detailed should the free-body diagram be?
One force per contact point, with magnitude and direction labelled separately. A rough diagram loses terms; draw one extra and cross it out rather than guess from the equation later.

A correct answer with skipped equations – full marks?
Not usually. Method marks are awarded line by line, so one extra sign-convention line costs less than the mark it saves.
