A-Level Physics 9702 Drill Guide: Five Papers, 2-Hour Pacing and a 12-Week Plan
- 2026-10-24
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · CAMBRIDGE A LEVEL PHYSICS 9702
Built on the 9702 syllabus (2025-2027): an A Level candidate sits five papers – Paper 1 multiple choice, 40 marks; Paper 2 AS structured, 60 marks in 1 h 15 min; Paper 3 practical, 40 marks in 2 h, which together make up half of the AS Level; Paper 4 A2 structured, 100 marks in 2 h for 38.5% of the A Level, the single heaviest paper; and Paper 5 planning and analysis, 30 marks in 1 h 15 min. Method only: what each paper tests, the drill order, pacing inside each paper, the usual mark losses, the error log and a 12-week timetable. For questions with worked solutions, use the original mocks linked below.
How is A-Level Physics 9702 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 4 (A Level structured): Structured questions, 100 marks (100 (38.5% A Level)); Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation): Two compulsory questions, 30 marks (30 (11.5% A Level)); Paper 1/2/3 (AS level): MC 40 + structured 60 + practical 40 (140 (AS))

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 4 (A Level structured) | Structured questions, 100 marks | 100 (38.5% A Level) | 2 h |
| Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation) | Two compulsory questions, 30 marks | 30 (11.5% A Level) | 1 h 15 min |
| Paper 1/2/3 (AS level) | MC 40 + structured 60 + practical 40 | 140 (AS) | 1h15 / 1h15 / 2h |
Ten questions in 2 hours is about 11 minutes each. Write the formula first (a = v^2/r, F = Bqv, E = hf), then substitute, then give the unit – all three carry marks.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 4 (A Level structured) | write the formula first, then substitute | Structured answers give only the final number: the formula marks are gone, the substituted values carry no unit, a power of ten turns 10^-19 into 10^-18 and shifts the answer by an order of magnitude, and force is written in N/C instead of newtons |
| Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation) | design, analyse, evaluate | The planning question is answered as description: independent and dependent variables are never defined, the controlled variables are unlisted, the graph is “draw a line” without saying which quantity goes on which axis, and uncertainty is dismissed with one closing sentence |
| Paper 1/2/3 (AS level) | A2 builds on AS content | Jumping to A2 before AS is secure: multiple choice is done on feel, the practical paper has no readings or instrument precision, and every Paper 4 step then rests on a loose AS concept that collapses as soon as the numbers change |
What is each A-Level Physics 9702 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 4 (A Level structured): write the formula first, then substitute; Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation): design, analyse, evaluate; Paper 1/2/3 (AS level): A2 builds on AS content
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Physics runs in four blocks: AS mechanics and electricity, the four A2 areas, planning, then timed papers. Weeks 1-3 are Paper 2 AS structured only (mechanics, materials, waves, electricity), 12 minutes a question, always formula, substitution, answer with unit, alongside 40 Paper 1 multiple-choice questions a week on the same topic. Weeks 4-7 move to the four Paper 4 areas (circular motion and gravitation, electric and magnetic fields, quantum and atomic physics, nuclear physics and oscillations), eight to ten years of one topic back to back, with a full timed Paper 4 every weekend. Weeks 8-9 are Paper 5 only, drilling three things: defining variables, building a readings table, and writing uncertainty and improvements. Weeks 10-11 mix all five papers under time, two sittings each, and Paper 1 as 40 questions in one hour. Week 12 redoes only the recurring error types and writes every core formula (a = v^2/r, F = Bqv, E = hf, T = 2 pi sqrt(m/k)) once from blank paper, with units.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 4 (A Level structured) | 2 h | about 11 min per question, 10 to check |
| Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation) | 1 h 15 min | about 35 min per question |
| Paper 1/2/3 (AS level) | 1h15 / 1h15 / 2h | AS underpins A2 |
How should the time be split inside each A-Level Physics 9702 paper?
Paper 4 (A Level structured): about 11 min per question, 10 to check; Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation): about 35 min per question; Paper 1/2/3 (AS level): AS underpins A2
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Missing formula | Jumping to the number | The formula carries 3 marks | Write a = v^2/r, F = Bqv first |
| Wrong power of ten | 10^-19 as 10^-18 | Keep the exponent exact | Photon energy is of order 10^-19 J |
| Wrong unit | Force as N/C | Magnetic/electric force is in N | Field is N/C, force is N |
The error log and the mark scheme
Four columns: formula (written first, and correct), values and units (every substituted quantity unit-bearing, final unit right), order of magnitude (powers of ten right, answer plausible) and physical meaning (one sentence on what the number stands for). Three entries in the third column means five pure estimation questions – powers of ten only, no arithmetic – before each session next week. An empty fourth column means you can calculate but not explain, which is where the Paper 4 explanation marks and the Paper 5 evaluation marks keep disappearing.
How many years should you drill?
9702 runs two sessions a year, June and November, so papers are plentiful, and the current syllabus covers the 2025-2027 sessions. Work the last five years of Papers 2 and 1 first (the AS shape is the most stable), then five years of Papers 4 and 5 for the A Level. Topic-by-topic drilling wants eight to ten years, but the bottleneck in physics is not volume: one structured question done three times – timed, then corrected for formula and unit, then explained aloud – beats ten years skimmed. Older papers from a previous syllabus can still be used, but check each topic against the current guide and drop what has been removed.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Physics 9702 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Physics 9702 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
If I sit only the AS Level, do I need Papers 4 and 5?
No. The AS Level is Paper 1 (multiple choice, 40 marks), Paper 2 (structured, 60 marks) and Paper 3 (practical, 40 marks), and those three are the whole AS assessment. Papers 4 and 5 belong to the A Level, and with Paper 4 at 38.5% of the A Level it is the paper worth starting early in the A2 year. Formula and unit habits still have to be built in the AS year, because every Paper 4 step rests on them.
Can the practical and planning papers be passed by memorising model answers?
No. Paper 3 wants real instrument readings, stated precision and uncertainty, and a gradient taken from a graph; Paper 5 wants an experiment designed from nothing, with every choice justified. Both papers award marks for how clearly the process is written, not for the final number, so the readings table and the method have to be written out by hand in practice, never just read.
