A-Level Psychology 9990 Paper 4 Drill Guide: Structuring the Options
- 2026-11-02
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · A-LEVEL PSYCHOLOGY PAPER 4: STRUCTURED ANSWERS IN THE OPTIONS
Paper 4 examines the optional units through application and evaluation, and the marks come from matching a study to the situation in the question: name the approach the scenario belongs to, cite one specific study with its procedure and result, then weigh its explanatory power and limits. Definitions alone, with no application, usually earn half. This page is the drilling method only.

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Approaches, Issues and Debates) | Section A 38 marks of core-study short answers, Section B 22 marks of extended response and essay | AS 50% / AL 25% | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 2 (Research Methods, the paper drilled here) | Section A 46 marks on methods and scenarios, Section B a 14-mark planning question | AS 50% / AL 25% | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 3 (Specialist Options) | A Level content: two specialist options of 30 marks each | AL 25% | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 4 (Specialist Options: Application and Research Methods) | Section A two options of 18 marks each, Section B a 24-mark planning question | AL 25% | 1 h 30 min |
A-Level Psychology drilling technique: separate the independent variable (what the researcher manipulates) from the dependent variable (what is measured); mean, median and mode suit different data – use the mode for nominal data and the median when there are extreme values; percentages remove the effect of sample size. In the planning question, write a testable hypothesis first, operationalise the IV and DV, and finish by evaluating generalisability or ethics – that section alone is 14 marks.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Approaches, Issues and Debates) | name the design before the findings | Definitions are written with no attempt to match the scenario to an approach. |
| Paper 2 (Research Methods, the paper drilled here) | operationalise the IV and DV | A study is cited by author and year only, with no procedure or finding. |
| Paper 3 (Specialist Options) | the essay splits into describe and evaluate | Evaluation says only that there are limitations, without naming one. |
| Paper 4 (Specialist Options: Application and Research Methods) | apply methods to an unseen scenario | Both options are revised thinly, and neither is deep enough. |
What is each A-Level Psychology 9990 Paper 4 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (Approaches, Issues and Debates): name the design before the findings; Paper 2 (Research Methods, the paper drilled here): operationalise the IV and DV; Paper 3 (Specialist Options): the essay splits into describe and evaluate; Paper 4 (Specialist Options: Application and Research Methods): apply methods to an unseen scenario
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks one to four build one table of the option studies: approach, study, sample, procedure, finding. Weeks five to eight write two application answers a week, forcing the approach into the first sentence and the study into the second. The final four weeks rehearse evaluation only, two limitations plus one remedy per answer, and sort the recurring scenarios into types.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (Approaches, Issues and Debates) | 1 h 30 min | about 5 min per short answer, 35 min for the essay |
| Paper 2 (Research Methods, the paper drilled here) | 1 h 30 min | allow 25 min for the planning question |
| Paper 3 (Specialist Options) | 1 h 30 min | about 45 min per option |
| Paper 4 (Specialist Options: Application and Research Methods) | 1 h 30 min | allow 30 min for the planning question |
How should the time be split inside each A-Level Psychology 9990 Paper 4 paper?
Paper 1 (Approaches, Issues and Debates): about 5 min per short answer, 35 min for the essay; Paper 2 (Research Methods, the paper drilled here): allow 25 min for the planning question; Paper 3 (Specialist Options): about 45 min per option; Paper 4 (Specialist Options: Application and Research Methods): allow 30 min for the planning question
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Confusing IV and DV | Treating the measured outcome as the IV | The design and hypothesis collapse | The IV is the condition the researcher manipulates |
| Mean used blindly | Reporting the mean with extreme values | The result is skewed | Report the median when there are outliers |
| No operationalisation | Writing only ‘memory’ | It cannot be tested | Write words recalled correctly out of 20 |
| Comparing raw frequencies | 27 people against 18 people | Sample size is ignored | Convert to percentages first |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: question and option; the sentence that lost the mark (no approach, thin study, vague evaluation); and the skeleton for next time. A fixed opener such as the study used this design and found this result keeps application answers stable.
How many years should you drill?
The 9990 options have been revised with the syllabus, so aim at eight years and stay inside the current option list; units no longer listed are background reading only. Answer study questions in current syllabus terms rather than copying an older mark scheme.
How many years of past papers is enough?

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the A-Level Psychology 9990 Paper 4 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the A-Level Psychology 9990 Paper 4 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
How many options should I revise?
One more than the paper requires, since the combination changes between sessions. Each option needs at least three studies ready to cite, including one that supports the approach and one that undercuts it.
Can I use personal experience in application questions?
As an opening line, not as a substitute for research. Marks go to course concepts and studies explaining the scenario, so personal experience earns at most one sentence.
