AP Physics 2 Mock: Fluids, Circuits, Optics, Heat
- 2026-10-12
TUTORZONE ORIGINAL MOCK PAPER · AP PHYSICS 2 (ALGEBRA-BASED)
Written to the College Board exam format: Section I multiple choice, 42 questions, 85 minutes, 50%; Section II free response, 4 questions, 95 minutes, 50% (four types). This paper demonstrates 4 Section II questions (fluids, circuits, optics, heat) with worked answers.
What is in the AP Physics 2 exam?
Direct answer: Section I multiple choice, 42 questions, 85 min, 50%; Section II free response, 4 questions, 95 min, 50%.

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section II (Free Response) | 4 questions across four FRQ types | 50% | 95 min |
| Section I (Multiple Choice) | 42 questions, discrete or question sets | 50% | 85 min |
Four questions in 95 minutes is about 23 minutes each. State the law or formula, then substitute, then give the answer with its unit, and explain the reasoning.
How this paper was built
This is a TutorZone original mock paper: the questions follow the College Board AP Physics 2 format (Section II, 4 free-response questions) and the answers are our own computations, not College Board questions or marking references.
Every answer was recomputed programmatically; g = 10 m/s^2.
Pacing
| Section | Marks | Suggested time | What to do first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section II (Free Response) | 50% | about 23 min per question | state the law or formula first |
| Section I (Multiple Choice) | 50% | about 2 min per question | eliminate clearly wrong options |
How is hydrostatic pressure calculated?
Direct answer: P = rho g h (density x g x depth), in Pa.
Section II: free response (4 questions)
Demonstrates the four FRQ types: routines (fluids), experiment (circuits), translation (optics), qualitative/quantitative (heat).
Question 1 (12 marks)
Question 1 (mathematical routines, fluids). What is the hydrostatic pressure 2 m below the surface of water (density 1000 kg/m^3, g = 10 m/s^2)?
Question 2 (12 marks)
Question 2 (experimental design and analysis, circuits). Design an experiment to measure a resistor’s resistance. If it carries 2 A at 12 V, calculate the resistance.
Question 3 (12 marks)
Question 3 (translation, optics). Light enters glass (n = 1.5) from air (n = 1) at 30 degrees. Use Snell’s law to find the angle of refraction.
Question 4 (12 marks)
Question 4 (qualitative/quantitative translation, heat). 0.5 kg of water (specific heat 4200 J/(kg °C)) rises 10 °C. Calculate the heat absorbed.
What is Snell’s law?
Direct answer: n1 sin(theta1) = n2 sin(theta2), describing refraction at an interface.
Answers and marks per question
Question 1
Use P = rho g h (4): P = 1000 x 10 x 2 = 20000 Pa (8).
Question 2
Experiment: measure voltage and current, use R = V/I (4): R = 12 / 2 = 6 Ω (8).
Question 3
Use n1 sin(theta1) = n2 sin(theta2) (4): sin(theta2) = sin30 / 1.5 = 0.333 (4) -> theta2 = 19.5 deg (4).
Question 4
Use Q = mc delta-T (4): Q = 0.5 x 4200 x 10 = 21000 J (8).
Which topics does this paper cover?
Direct answer: hydrostatic pressure, circuits (Ohm’s law), refraction (Snell’s law) and heat (Q = mc delta-T).
Where these marks are usually lost
| Mistake | What it looks like | What it costs | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| No reasoning | A number with no reasoning | FRQ needs the physical reasoning | State P = rho g h, R = V/I first |
| Snell’s law swapped | Swapping n1 and n2 | n1 sin(theta1) = n2 sin(theta2) | n1 is the incident medium, n2 the refracted |
| Wrong unit | Pressure as N | Hydrostatic pressure is in Pa | Write 20000 Pa |
How to use this paper
First sit: the full 95 minutes on all 4 questions with no references.
Mark it: check the law, substitution, unit and reasoning in every question.
Second sit: redo three to seven days later, aiming to finish inside 80 minutes.
What should I do after finishing this paper?
Direct answer: log questions with missing reasoning or wrong formulas; redo in three to seven days; and drill Section I multiple choice.
