DSE BAFS Paper 1 Drill Guide: MC and Short Questions

DSE BAFS Paper 1 Drill Guide: MC and Short Questions

  • 2026-11-02

TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · DSE BAFS PAPER 1: MC AND SHORT QUESTIONS

Paper 1 of BAFS is decided by accuracy in the MC section and the short questions: knowing the theory is not the same as scoring it, and a reversed debit or a skipped step loses the mark. This page covers the drilling method only: how to split time between the two sections, which question types to drill first, and how to keep the error log.

How is DSE BAFS Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?

Section A (multiple-choice): Compulsory Part; 17% of the subject mark (17%); Section B (three short questions): Compulsory Part; 8% of the subject mark (8%); Paper 2 (Elective Part, separate paper): 75% over 2 h 30 min: Section A 33%, Section B 27%, Section C 15% (one (75%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Section A (multiple-choice) Compulsory Part; 17% of the subject mark 17% 30 min
Section B (three short questions) Compulsory Part; 8% of the subject mark 8% 25-30 min
Paper 2 (Elective Part, separate paper) 75% over 2 h 30 min: Section A 33%, Section B 27%, Section C 15% (one question) 75% 2 h 30 min

Sixty minutes splits roughly 30 for the MC section and 25-30 for the three short questions. Accounting calculations such as depreciation, contribution and break-even carry both method and answer marks, so write every step.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Section A (multiple-choice) Know the accounting equation and ratios; calculation marks are non-negotiable The MC answer is guessed without writing the entry first, so one reversed side kills it.
Section B (three short questions) Both sides of every entry; show the working The short question gives the figure with no working, losing every method mark.
Paper 2 (Elective Part, separate paper) This paper covers Paper 1 only The elective section memorises definitions but never practises the statement format.

What is each DSE BAFS Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?

Section A (multiple-choice): Know the accounting equation and ratios; calculation marks are non-negotiable; Section B (three short questions): Both sides of every entry; show the working; Paper 2 (Elective Part, separate paper): This paper covers Paper 1 only

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

Should drilling go by topic first or by year?

By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks one to four drill thirty MC questions in twenty-five minutes and write the correct entry direction for every question straight after. Weeks five to eight switch to short questions, always writing the working before the answer. The final four weeks are timed whole papers, then sorting misses by topic and redoing one topic for three days running.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Section A (multiple-choice) 30 min about 30 min
Section B (three short questions) 25-30 min about 25-30 min
Paper 2 (Elective Part, separate paper) 2 h 30 min not covered here

How should the time be split inside each DSE BAFS Paper 1 paper?

Section A (multiple-choice): about 30 min; Section B (three short questions): about 25-30 min; Paper 2 (Elective Part, separate paper): not covered here

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
One-sided entries Debit only, or an amount with no double entry Double entry must balance; a single side earns nothing Write the debit, then the credit, then check they match
Forgetting residual value Cost ÷ life Residual value must come out first Depreciation = (cost − residual) ÷ life
Wrong base for break-even Using the price instead of the contribution Break-even = fixed costs ÷ unit contribution Work out the contribution first
Reconciliation direction Adding unpresented cheques to the bank balance They make the bank balance too high, so they are deducted Decide which book has not yet recorded the item
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Three columns: topic and question type; the sentence that lost the mark (reversed side, missing step, wrong unit); and the standard wording. Anything appearing three times becomes a single card that you revise on its own before the exam.

08

How many years should you drill?

The BAFS structure has been stable for years, so older papers stay useful: time the last five as whole papers and split earlier ones by topic. The official scheme shows where each calculation step earns, so mark against it cell by cell.

How many years of past papers is enough?

09

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE BAFS Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE BAFS Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.

By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.

How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.

Do I need working in the MC section?
The answer alone is enough on the day, but in practice write the entry or the calculation: only then do you know it was not a guess, and only then can you see which step broke.

What should I drop when short questions run out of time?
Do the formatted ones first (entries, ratios, simple statements) and leave the long explanations last. Three complete parts beat five half-written ones.
