HKDSE Biology Paper 1: Terminology, Experiments and 150-Minute Pacing
- 2026-10-09
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · HKDSE BIOLOGY PAPER 1
Biology Paper 1 is 60% in 2 hours 30 minutes; the framework sets Section A multiple-choice at 18% and Section B conventional questions at 42%. Paper 2 electives are 20% (answer two of four) and SBA 20%. Biology turns on terminology: one wrong technical term costs the mark.
What is in HKDSE Biology Paper 1?
Direct answer: Paper 1 is 60% of the subject in 2 hours 30 minutes: Section A multiple-choice 18% and Section B conventional questions 42%, all compulsory. Biology also has Paper 2 electives (20%, 1 hour, answer two of four) and SBA (20%).

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A · multiple-choice | 18% of the subject; concept recognition, experimental design and graph analysis | 18% | 30-35 min suggested |
| Section B · conventional questions | 42% of the subject; answers must use precise biological terminology and explain design and data | 42% | 105-110 min suggested |
Biology marking leans on keywords, so reviewing against the marking scheme is worth more than another paper. Budget 20 minutes after each attempt to circle the keywords you failed to produce.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Section A · multiple-choice | Drill confusable pairs side by side (diffusion vs osmosis, mitosis vs meiosis) | Overspending on MC and squeezing the 42% Section B |
| Section B · conventional questions | Lead with keywords: in experiments, name the control, independent, dependent and controlled variables | Everyday wording instead of terms, and experiments with no control described |
Where do Biology marks go?
Direct answer: imprecise terminology. Marking depends on keywords: writing “water moves across” instead of osmosis, or mixing up diffusion and active transport, earns nothing even when the understanding is right. List each topic’s keywords and check after every paper that you used the expected terms.
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
What must an experimental design answer contain?
Direct answer: four variables and one control: the independent variable (what you change), the dependent variable (what you measure), the controlled variables (what stays constant), and a control group where the treatment is not applied. Cover those five and the design marks are secure.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Two full timed Paper 1s a week, each followed by 20 minutes against the marking scheme, adding missed keywords to a per-topic terminology list.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Section A · multiple-choice | 建議 30–35 分鐘 | About 1 min per question |
| Section B · conventional questions | 建議 105–110 分鐘 | 8-12 min per question; 10 min checking |
How should the 150 minutes be split?
Direct answer: about 30-35 minutes for Section A (18%) and 105-110 minutes for Section B (42%), with 10 minutes to check terminology, units and unanswered parts. Biology answers run long, so split Section B time by marks and avoid over-writing the first question.
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday wording | “Water moves across”, “the cell eats” | Marking rewards terms, not plain description | Build a keyword list per topic and check each item after a paper |
| No control in experiments | Describing steps only | Design marks hinge on variables and controls | Always state independent, dependent, controlled and control group |
| Overlong answers | A full page for one question | Time runs out on later questions | Allocate by marks; keywords first, explanation second |
The error log and the mark scheme
Log by topic and term: under each topic, list the technical words you missed or misused. That list often lifts marks faster than any set of notes.
How many years should you drill?
Paper 1 is stable and ten years covers most Compulsory topics; Paper 2 electives (two of four) need their own drilling.
How many years of Paper 1 should you drill?
Direct answer: no official figure. Paper 1 formats and experiments are stable and ten years covers most Compulsory topics; with less time do the latest five fully timed. Sort questions by topic (cells, genetics, ecology, physiology) and tally which area produces the most terminology errors.
Frequently asked questions
How is Paper 2 chosen?
Paper 2 sets four questions and candidates answer two; follow the HKEAA paper instructions, and drill both electives you study.
May I draw diagrams?
Yes, and a clearly labelled diagram can beat prose, provided every part is labelled.
How much is SBA worth?
Biology SBA is 20% of the subject and includes practical assessment.
