HKDSE Design & Applied Tech Drill Guide: Four Layers and Timing
- 2026-11-02
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · HKDSE DAT: THE FOUR-LAYER DESIGN TASK
Half of DAT sits in the written papers and half in the school-based assessment: Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry 30% each and the design project 40%, over 25 to 35 hours. The written papers lose marks not on knowledge but on a design task that states an idea without the opportunity, materials and communication layers. This page is the drilling method only.
How is DSE Design & Applied Tech assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (compulsory): Section A design task (60) + Section B two of three (40) (30%); Paper 2 (elective): Two of five elective modules, two of three each (30%); SBA (design project): One design project, 25-35 hours (40%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (compulsory) | Section A design task (60) + Section B two of three (40) | 30% | 2 h |
| Paper 2 (elective) | Two of five elective modules, two of three each | 30% | 2 h |
| SBA (design project) | One design project, 25-35 hours | 40% | 25-35 h |
Paper 1 in 2 h: about 70 min on Section A (split across the four parts) and 25 min per Section B question. A design task needs opportunity, idea, material and communication.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (compulsory) | opportunity, idea, material, communication | The design task gives an idea only, with the opportunity, materials and communication layers missing. |
| Paper 2 (elective) | automation, digital media, materials, electronics, visualisation | Material comparisons list properties with no worked application example. |
| SBA (design project) | the full design process | The project record does not match the physical model, so the process cannot be verified. |
What is each DSE Design & Applied Tech paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (compulsory): opportunity, idea, material, communication; Paper 2 (elective): automation, digital media, materials, electronics, visualisation; SBA (design project): the full design process
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks one to four drill the four layers: take one real product a week and write the opportunity, idea, materials and communication each on a page, with one application example per material property. Weeks five to eight switch to timed papers, two hours for Paper 1 with seventy minutes on Part A and about twenty-five per Part B question, sketching the frame before writing. The last four weeks run the project alongside: split the 25 to 35 hours into six stages with a record each, then spend the final fortnight on the error log and the testing and evaluation write-up.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (compulsory) | 2 h | about 70 min Section A, 25 min per Section B |
| Paper 2 (elective) | 2 h | answer two per chosen module |
| SBA (design project) | 25-35 h | physical/virtual model plus design log |
How should the time be split inside each DSE Design & Applied Tech paper?
Paper 1 (compulsory): about 70 min Section A, 25 min per Section B; Paper 2 (elective): answer two per chosen module; SBA (design project): physical/virtual model plus design log
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design task missing layers | Ideas but no opportunity or material | The task needs all four layers | Write opportunity, idea, material, communication in turn |
| Materials without reasons | Properties but no examples | Material answers need property and example | Give an application per material |
| Confusing projections | Mixing orthographic and isometric | The two projections differ in purpose | Orthographic for dimensions, isometric for form |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: question and paper; which layer failed (no opportunity, materials without examples, wrong communication method, ran out of time); and the corrected action, such as always pairing a property with one application. Keep the project errors on a separate page, recording why each test failed and what changed, because that page is the evidence the school-based assessment marks.
How many years should you drill?
The paper structure has been stable, but the elective units and the project requirements have been revised, so drill eight years: time the last five and use older papers for topic practice. Take the Paper 2 electives from the units currently offered rather than inferring this year from old combinations.
How many years of past papers is enough?
The paper structure has been stable, but the elective units and the project requirements have been revised, so drill eight years: time the last five and use older papers for topic practice. Take the Paper 2 electives from the units currently offered rather than inferring this year from old combinations.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE Design & Applied Tech drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE Design & Applied Tech mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
The project is 40%, so does it matter more than the written papers?
By weighting yes, but neither can be dropped. The project is worth more and runs longer, and an incomplete record loses a whole block; the written papers are the marks you can still add late. Put the six project stages in the calendar first, then fit drilling between them.
Why do material questions lose marks for listing properties only?
The requirement is a property plus an application, so properties alone answer half the question. Drill one property and one use per material, for example aluminium being light and corrosion resistant, used for an outdoor frame; both halves make the answer complete.

Next step: find a tutor / register as a tutor
After drilling, the hard part is telling a conceptual error from a writing error. Tell us the year group, the school and your available times, and TutorZone will match you with a tutor who knows the HKEAA assessment requirements.
Demand for tutors in this subject is steady, and those who can explain the marking scheme and where marks are won are especially sought after. Register free; you pay only when a match succeeds.
