HKDSE Economics Paper 1: Order, Calculation and the 60-Minute Split
- 2026-11-02
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · HKDSE ECONOMICS PAPER 1: ORDER AND CALCULATION
Economics Paper 1 gives you 60 minutes for twenty multiple-choice items, three minutes each, so order is marks: take the calculations first (elasticity, GDP, money supply, multiplier) because the arithmetic settles them, then work the concept items by elimination. This page covers the 60-minute split, a 12-week drilling plan, the error log and the usual mark losses.
How is HKDSE Economics Paper 1 assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 1 (multiple-choice): Compulsory Part; 30% of the subject mark (30%); Paper 2 (Compulsory Part, separate paper): 70% over 2 h 30 min: Section A 26%, Section B 35%, Section C 9% (70%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (multiple-choice) | Compulsory Part; 30% of the subject mark | 30% | 1 hour |
| Paper 2 (Compulsory Part, separate paper) | 70% over 2 h 30 min: Section A 26%, Section B 35%, Section C 9% | 70% | 2 h 30 min |
Sixty minutes for 20 MC items is three minutes each. Start with the calculations (elasticity, GDP, money supply, multiplier) since they are objectively right or wrong, then use elimination on the concept items.
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (multiple-choice) | Do the calculations first, then the concept items | Definitions are memorised but the elasticity, GDP and multiplier items get skipped. |
| Paper 2 (Compulsory Part, separate paper) | This paper covers Paper 1 only | Stock and flow are mixed up, and a price change is read as a shift of the demand curve. |
What is each HKDSE Economics Paper 1 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 1 (multiple-choice): Do the calculations first, then the concept items; Paper 2 (Compulsory Part, separate paper): This paper covers Paper 1 only
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Weeks 1-3: calculations only. Take twenty items each on elasticity, GDP components, money supply and the multiplier, writing the formula before substituting until the numbers tell you which one applies.
Weeks 4-6: timed papers, twenty items in 45 minutes with 15 minutes to review. In the review check two things only: movement along a curve versus a shift, and the stock and flow definitions.
Weeks 7-9: elimination drills for concept items. Write why two options are wrong before comparing the last two, and keep one page of the recurring traps (other things equal, nominal versus real).
Weeks 10-12: redo the log, add three full papers, and give Paper 2 its own slot so it is not discovered untouched in the final week.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 (multiple-choice) | 1 hour | 60 min (2-3 min per item) |
| Paper 2 (Compulsory Part, separate paper) | 2 h 30 min | not covered here |
How should the time be split inside each HKDSE Economics Paper 1 paper?
Paper 1 (multiple-choice): 60 min (2-3 min per item); Paper 2 (Compulsory Part, separate paper): not covered here
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memorising without calculating | Skipping elasticity, GDP or multiplier items | Those are the easiest marks on the paper | Turn each into a fixed formula and check it |
| Mixing stocks and flows | Counting everything as money supply | Money supply covers currency held by the public plus deposits | Fix the definition before answering |
| Ignoring ceteris paribus | Confusing a shift of demand with a movement along it | They are different concepts with different causes | Decide which curve moves first |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns, one item type per page: (1) the numbers given and which formula was being tested; (2) the failing action, whether the formula was wrong, a percentage or unit was converted incorrectly, or a shift was confused with a movement; (3) the fixed move for next time, for example “write the formula, mark the direction of the shift, then read the options”. Three hits in the same column means ten more items of that type.
How many years should you drill?
Past papers exist from the first DSE cohort in 2012 and the multiple-choice shapes are stable, which makes this one of the subjects worth drilling by year. Drill by item type first, then by whole year; where an older paper touches revised content, take only its calculation and graph technique.
How many years of past papers is enough?
Past papers exist from the first DSE cohort in 2012 and the multiple-choice shapes are stable, which makes this one of the subjects worth drilling by year. Drill by item type first, then by whole year; where an older paper touches revised content, take only its calculation and graph technique.
Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the HKDSE Economics Paper 1 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the HKDSE Economics Paper 1 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Should Paper 2 be drilled at the same time?
Yes, in a separate slot. Paper 1 is speed and calculation while Paper 2 is extended-answer structure and graph analysis, and the two need different drills; fixing Paper 2 to one slot a week and giving the rest to timed Paper 1 work beats mixing them.
Can a calculator be used in the calculation items?
Yes, but keep the keying order fixed: percentage change first, then the elasticity figure, then the classification. Drill with the same calculator in the same order so exam-day keying errors do not cost marks.

After drilling, the hard part is telling a conceptual error from a writing error. Tell us the year group, the school and your available times, and TutorZone will match you with a tutor who knows the HKEAA assessment requirements.
Demand for tutors in this subject is steady, and those who can explain the marking scheme and where marks are won are especially sought after. Register free; you pay only when a match succeeds.
