Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (long questions) | Two of three questions across three themes | 18% | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 1 (MC + short questions) | Section A MC + Section B short, all compulsory | 42% | 2 h |
| Paper 3 (practical) | Two activities 13.33% each + fitness 13.33% | 40% | practical assessment |
Two questions in 1 h 30 min is about 45 minutes each. Answers need point, principle and example, using precise PE vocabulary (FITT, VO2max, ATP-PC).
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (long questions) | point, principle, example | Bullet points with no principle behind them: progression is named but not how progressive overload works |
| Paper 1 (MC + short questions) | answer with precise PE vocabulary | Physical fitness and fitness components are used interchangeably, losing the marks awarded for precise vocabulary |
| Paper 3 (practical) | movement skills and fitness level | A two-sided question is answered on the benefits only, leaving the stress-and-coping side blank |
What is each DSE Physical Education Paper 2 paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 2 (long questions): point, principle, example; Paper 1 (MC + short questions): answer with precise PE vocabulary; Paper 3 (practical): movement skills and fitness level
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks on Paper 2. Weeks 1-4 drill one syllabus theme a week: write a one-page note per theme (definition, mechanism, factors), then take past long questions on it, forcing the point-principle-example layers every time. Weeks 5-8 pair two questions in 90 minutes, training the choice: scan all three stems, pick the two with the most principle to write. Weeks 9-11 are whole papers in 90 minutes with a three-line outline planned in the first 3 minutes. The last week redoes only the types appearing three times or more.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (long questions) | 1 h 30 min | about 45 min per question |
| Paper 1 (MC + short questions) | 2 h | about 30 min MC, 90 min short |
| Paper 3 (practical) | practical assessment | one ball game + one from athletics/gymnastics/swimming |
How should the time be split inside each DSE Physical Education Paper 2 paper?
Paper 2 (long questions): about 45 min per question; Paper 1 (MC + short questions): about 30 min MC, 90 min short; Paper 3 (practical): one ball game + one from athletics/gymnastics/swimming
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| No principle | Listing components without principles | Long answers need principle and example | Support with FITT, VO2max and so on |
| Loose vocabulary | Confusing fitness terms | The scheme wants precise PE vocabulary | Use health-related fitness, cardiorespiratory endurance etc. |
| One side only | Values but not pressure and coping | Questions ask for both sides | Break the question down and answer each part |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: principle (which one, and whether its mechanism was explained), vocabulary (fitness versus fitness components, FITT and VO2max written correctly), both sides (when the question asks for two sides, was the second written). The middle column is the cheapest to fix.
How many years should you drill?
The three-paper split has been stable for years, so five years of whole papers cover the question types. Older papers differ in syllabus content, so check the topic against the current curriculum document before drilling, and do not assume an older wording still matches.

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE Physical Education Paper 2 drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE Physical Education Paper 2 mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Paper 2 is only 18% – is it worth drilling?
Yes, in proportion. Paper 1 at 42% takes most of the time, but Paper 2 trains turning a principle into an argument, which the short answers in Paper 1 also need. Keep one long answer a week to hold the shape and give the rest to Paper 1.
Three questions, choose two – pick the topic I know best?
Read the verb before the topic. The same theme can be asked as explain or as evaluate, and evaluation needs two sides plus a judgement. Circle the verbs while scanning and take the two explain-and-apply items, avoiding the one that demands a judgement you have no example for.
