DSE Physical Education Drilling Guide: Papers 1-3, Vocabulary and a 12-Week Plan
- 2026-11-01
TUTORZONE EXAM DRILL GUIDE · DSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Built on the HKDSE Physical Education syllabus: Paper 1 multiple choice and short questions (2 h, 42%), Paper 2 long questions (1 h 30, two of three, 18%), Paper 3 practical (two activities at 13.33% each plus fitness 13.33%, 40%). Method only: drill order across the three papers, how to train vocabulary and principles, a 12-week plan, the usual mark losses and the error log.
How is DSE Physical Education assessed, and what does each part carry?
Paper 2 (long questions): Two of three questions across three themes (18%); Paper 1 (MC + short questions): Section A MC + Section B short, all compulsory (42%); Paper 3 (practical): Two activities 13.33% each + fitness 13.33% (40%)

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (long questions) | Two of three questions across three themes | 18% | 1 h 30 min |
| Paper 1 (MC + short questions) | Section A MC + Section B short, all compulsory | 42% | 2 h |
| Paper 3 (practical) | Two activities 13.33% each + fitness 13.33% | 40% | practical assessment |
Two questions in 1 h 30 min is about 45 minutes each. Answers need point, principle and example, using precise PE vocabulary (FITT, VO2max, ATP-PC).
What each paper is actually testing
| Paper | Drill focus | How marks are lost |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (long questions) | point, principle, example | Long answers list points without a principle behind them (FITT, VO₂max, ATP-PC); the example sits in its own paragraph, detached from the argument |
| Paper 1 (MC + short questions) | answer with precise PE vocabulary | Multiple choice answered from impression; short answers use everyday words instead of PE vocabulary, mixing fitness of the body with physical fitness components |
| Paper 3 (practical) | movement skills and fitness level | Training only one activity; the second activity and the fitness tests start a fortnight before the assessment, too late to correct technique |
What is each DSE Physical Education paper really testing, and what should you drill?
Paper 2 (long questions): point, principle, example; Paper 1 (MC + short questions): answer with precise PE vocabulary; Paper 3 (practical): movement skills and fitness level
Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme
| Step | What you do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. By topic | Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) | Exposes what is genuinely not understood |
| 2. By year | Whole papers to time, one or two a week | Trains pace, stamina and question selection |
| 3. Mark scheme | Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed | Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong |
Should drilling go by topic first or by year?
By topic first, then whole papers by year, then the mark scheme. The first third of the time goes topic by topic (8-10 years of the same topic back to back), the middle switches to timed whole papers, and the last fortnight only redoes the recurring errors from your log.
A 12-week drilling timetable
| Week | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-3 | By topic: foundation | Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall |
| Weeks 4-6 | By topic: core | 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic |
| Weeks 7-8 | By topic: advanced and electives | Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure |
| Weeks 9-10 | By year: timed papers | One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials |
| Week 11 | Mark scheme work | Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted |
| Week 12 | Plug holes and simulate | Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation |
Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Twelve weeks run on two tracks. Written track: one timed Paper 1 a week (30 min multiple choice, then 90 min short answers) and one 45-minute Paper 2 long answer, self-marked against point, principle and example. Practical track: fix both activities in week 1, train each twice a week and log volume plus fitness data (shuttle run, sit and reach, grip), run one full fitness test from week 9 and spend weeks 11-12 on the weakest item only.
Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.
Pacing
| Paper | Time | Suggested split |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (long questions) | 1 h 30 min | about 45 min per question |
| Paper 1 (MC + short questions) | 2 h | about 30 min MC, 90 min short |
| Paper 3 (practical) | practical assessment | one ball game + one from athletics/gymnastics/swimming |
How should the time be split inside each DSE Physical Education paper?
Paper 2 (long questions): about 45 min per question; Paper 1 (MC + short questions): about 30 min MC, 90 min short; Paper 3 (practical): one ball game + one from athletics/gymnastics/swimming
The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks
| Mistake | What it looks like | What actually happens | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| No principle | Listing components without principles | Long answers need principle and example | Support with FITT, VO2max and so on |
| Loose vocabulary | Confusing fitness terms | The scheme wants precise PE vocabulary | Use health-related fitness, cardiorespiratory endurance etc. |
| One side only | Values but not pressure and coping | Questions ask for both sides | Break the question down and answer each part |
The error log and the mark scheme
Three columns: vocabulary (does the answer use course terms), principle (named and explained, not just named), example (specific to a movement, muscle or training method). The second column is where marks go: the four FITT letters appear without saying how each applies to the case in the question.
How many years should you drill?
PE has been examined since 2012. Paper 1 has kept its shape and Paper 2 rotates through the three course themes, so five years cover the question types; older papers are still readable, but check terminology against the current syllabus and the annual candidates report.
How many years of past papers is enough?

Frequently asked questions
Is this page a mock paper or a drilling guide?
This is the DSE Physical Education drilling guide: assessment structure, drill order, a 12-week timetable, pacing, common mark losses and the error-log method. For questions with answers, use the DSE Physical Education mock papers linked under Related.
By topic or by year first?
By topic. Eight to ten years of the same topic back to back is what exposes repeating errors; going straight to whole papers just repeats the same batch under time pressure.
How should the error log be written?
Do not copy out questions. Per error record four things: question reference, which step failed (concept, wording, calculation), what the mark scheme requires, and the correct action next time.
Can the practical paper be drilled?
Yes, but not with past papers. It assesses movement skills in two activities plus fitness levels, so the method is a fixed training plan with records: two sessions a week, volume and test data written down, one full fitness test before the assessment, and the last fortnight spent on whatever the numbers say is weakest.
Which written paper should come first?
Paper 1, then Paper 2. Paper 1 carries 42% and touches every theme, so five years of it produce a vocabulary list and a map of recurring topics; that vocabulary is the raw material for principle-plus-example long answers. Start with Paper 2 and the answers stay at the level of common sense.
