Visual Arts is the one subject split evenly between the paper and the portfolio: one four-hour paper worth 50% (Part A art appreciation 10%, Part B making 40%) and the SBA portfolio worth 50% (research workbook 20%, artwork or critical studies 30%). The portfolio is the half you can prepare early and bank.

How is HKDSE Visual Arts assessed?

Direct answer: The public examination is 50% and the SBA portfolio 50%. The exam is one four-hour paper: choose Paper 1 (visual presentation of a theme) or Paper 2 (design); Part A art appreciation and criticism is 45 minutes and 10% of the subject, Part B making is 3 h 15 min and 40%. Assessment at a glance (2027)

Component Content Weighting Duration
Paper 1 or Paper 2 (Part A 10% / Part B 40%) Choose Paper 1 (visual presentation of a theme) or Paper 2 (design); Part A art appreciation and criticism 45 minutes (10%), Part B making 3 h 15 min (40%) 50% 4 hours
SBA · Research Workbook Research workbook, 20% of the subject 20% During the course
SBA · Artwork or Critical Studies Artwork or critical studies on a theme, 30% of the subject; the work and the creative brief are assessed as a whole 30% During the course

One paper, four hours: Part A is 45 minutes for 10% and Part B 3 h 15 min for 40%. Drill Part A first (it is the most neglected), then rehearse finishing inside the time, keeping the last ten minutes for the creative brief.

02

What each paper is actually testing

Paper Drill focus How marks are lost
Paper 1 or Paper 2 (Part A 10% / Part B 40%) Drill Part A as formal analysis, context and evaluation; drill Part B to finish a coherent work within 3 h 15 min Part A full of feelings with no analysis; unfinished work or a missing creative brief
SBA · Research Workbook The workbook needs research, experimentation and reflection, and must show how ideas evolved Photos of finished works with no sketches or experiments
SBA · Artwork or Critical Studies Choose a theme that sustains several works, and write the brief with your intention and why you chose the media A theme too narrow for more than one work; a brief that contradicts the work

When should the portfolio start?

Direct answer: As early as possible. The portfolio is 50% of the subject and the workbook needs accumulated sketches, research, experiments and reflection. Settle the theme in the first term of S5 and write up the workbook the same day as each studio session.

03

Drill order: by topic, then by year, then the mark scheme

Step What you do Why
1. By topic Work through each topic, starting with the paper that allows least help (no calculator / closed book) Exposes what is genuinely not understood
2. By year Whole papers to time, one or two a week Trains pace, stamina and question selection
3. Mark scheme Go through the marking scheme question by question and log the scoring steps you missed Most lost marks are written wrong, not thought wrong

How should Part A art appreciation be written?

Direct answer: Three stages: (1) formal analysis – composition, colour, material and technique; (2) context – the period, culture or movement the work belongs to; (3) evaluation – a supported judgement. Subjective feeling with no analysis scores low.

04

A 12-week drilling timetable

Week Phase What to do
Weeks 1-3 By topic: foundation Topic by topic, starting with the easiest marks, building habits and recall
Weeks 4-6 By topic: core 8-10 years of the same topic back to back, errors classified by topic
Weeks 7-8 By topic: advanced and electives Elective and higher-order topics, now under time pressure
Weeks 9-10 By year: timed papers One full paper a week, timed, no reference materials
Week 11 Mark scheme work Question by question against the marking scheme; list the scoring steps you omitted
Week 12 Plug holes and simulate Only the recurring errors from your log, then one full exam simulation

Subject-specific weighting for this timetable: Make the portfolio the spine (weekly studio and research blocks), with a timed mock every two weeks, and devote week 11 to Part A appreciation.

Use it properly: this is not a checklist to finish. Every week must keep time for redoing errors, or from week 9 you will be repeating the same batch.

05

Pacing

Paper Time Suggested split
Paper 1 or Paper 2 (Part A 10% / Part B 40%) 4 小時 Part A 45 min; 15 min planning; about 165 min making; last 10 min for the brief
SBA · Research Workbook 修業期間 Write up the same day; at least two pages a week
SBA · Artwork or Critical Studies 修業期間 Settle the theme in S5, complete and revise in the S6 first term

How are the artwork and the creative brief marked?

Direct answer: The work and the brief are assessed as a whole, not separately, so the brief must match the work and state your intention and why you chose those media.

06

The drilling mistakes that cost the most marks

Mistake What it looks like What actually happens Instead
Portfolio postponed Assuming studio work can be rushed at the end The workbook cannot gain depth late, losing 20% Write the workbook up the same day as each session
Feelings in Part A A review rather than analysis Part A wants formal analysis and context Formal analysis, context, evaluation – all three
Brief that contradicts the work The work first, the brief bolted on They are assessed as a whole, so inconsistency costs marks Write the intention first and revise the brief against the finished work
07

The error log and the mark scheme

Keep the record by medium and technique: each page covers what a medium can express, its limits and the themes it suits. This doubles as workbook material.

08

How many years should you drill?

The released paper is limited, so five to eight years is enough; the priorities are timed studio practice and accumulating the portfolio.

How many years of past papers should you drill?

Direct answer: The released paper has a limited number of questions, so five to eight years is enough. Marks come more from finishing a coherent work in 3 h 15 min: run a timed studio session every two weeks and build the workbook alongside.

09

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Paper 1 and Paper 2?
Paper 1 is visual presentation of a theme and Paper 2 is design; you sit one of them, and both share the same structure (Part A appreciation 10%, Part B making 40%).

How is the SBA split?
The research workbook is 20% of the subject and the artwork or critical studies 30%, 50% together.

What goes into the creative brief?
Your intention and why you chose those media and techniques; the brief and the work are assessed together, so they must agree.
