TUTORZONE ORIGINAL DRILLING MOCK · IB SPORTS, EXERCISE AND HEALTH SCIENCE PAPER 2
Written to the IB SEHS course: Paper 2 (short-answer and extended response) SL 1 h 15 min, 50 marks, 35% – Section A data question plus Section B extended response (one from three). Paper 1 SL is 45 min/30 questions/20%; Paper 3 SL 1 h/40 marks/25%. This is a Paper 2 drilling mock with answers and techniques.
What is in IB Sports Science Paper 2?
Direct answer: SL 1 h 15 min, 50 marks, 35% – a Section A data question plus a Section B extended response (one from three). HL is 2 h 15 min, 90 marks.

Assessment at a glance (2027)
| Component | Content | Weighting | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (short + extended) | SL 50 marks (HL 90) | 35% | SL 1 h 15 min / HL 2 h 15 min |
| Paper 1 (multiple choice) | SL 30 questions (HL 40) | 20% | SL 45 min / HL 1 h |
IB Sports Science Paper 2 drilling technique: data questions must quote figures, state the trend and compare magnitudes, using overlapping standard deviations to judge significance; p < 0.05 means rejecting the null hypothesis; physiology answers should quote the equation and substitute (cardiac output = HR x SV); extended responses need both sides, specific factors and why they affect validity. Bring a calculator.
How this paper was built
This is a TutorZone original drilling mock: the questions and data are our own teaching samples, not IB past papers, marking references or IB publications.
Pacing
| Section | Marks | Suggested time | What to do first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 (short + extended) | 35% | about 25 min Section A, 45 min Section B | data analysis + physiology essays |
| Paper 1 (multiple choice) | 20% | about 1.5 min per question | core topics + HL extension |
How do I score on the data question?
Direct answer: quote the figures (means, standard deviations), state the trend, compare magnitudes, and use whether the SD ranges overlap to judge significance.
Paper 2: Section A data question + Section B extended response
Quote figures in Section A; quote equations and weigh both sides in Section B.
Question 1 (Section A: 6 marks)
Data question: the table shows changes in VO₂max (mean +/- standard deviation) after 8 weeks of training in a HIIT group and a MICT group. Describe and compare the results.
Question 2 (Section A: 4 marks)
Following on: the study reports p = 0.03. What does this result tell you?
Question 3 (Section B: 10 marks)
Extended response (excerpt): explain the immediate cardiovascular responses to sustained aerobic exercise (the first phase).
Question 4 (Section B: 8 marks)
Extended response (excerpt): explain the causes and consequences of cardiovascular drift during prolonged exercise.
Question 5 (Section B: 12 marks)
Extended response (excerpt): evaluate the research design of a training study and identify two factors that may affect the validity of its results.
What is essential in a physiology answer?
Direct answer: quote the equation and substitute figures – cardiac output = heart rate x stroke volume – and explain how both rise together.
Paper 2 answers and marks
Question 1
(1) Trend: both groups’ VO₂max rises (1). (2) Cite data: HIIT from X to Y, MICT from A to B (2). (3) Compare the size of the change: HIIT improves more (1). (4) Standard deviation: the SD ranges overlap, so the difference may not be significant (2). “It increased” alone scores nothing – quote the figures.
Question 2
p is below the 0.05 critical value (2) -> the difference is statistically significant and can be attributed to the training method rather than chance (2). State that p < 0.05 means rejecting the null hypothesis.
Question 3
Show the multiplicative relationship: (1) heart rate rises – sympathetic stimulation of the SA node (2); (2) stroke volume rises (Frank-Starling mechanism, increased venous return) (3); (3) cardiac output = heart rate x stroke volume, both rising so Q increases (3); (4) vasodilation / redistribution of blood to the active muscle (2). Quote the cardiac output equation.
Question 4
(1) Cause: dehydration lowers plasma volume, reducing venous return and stroke volume (4); (2) Compensation: heart rate rises to maintain cardiac output (2); (3) Consequence: elevated heart rate limits performance and raises core temperature (2). Link back to HR x SV = Q.
Question 5
Weigh both sides with specific factors: (1) strength – random allocation, controlled variables (3); (2) weakness – small sample, short training period (3); (3) factor one – participants’ diet or sleep uncontrolled (3); (4) factor two – tester expectancy or measurement error (3). Explain why each affects validity.
Which topics does this paper drill?
Direct answer: analysing training-study data, statistical significance (p-values, standard deviation), immediate cardiovascular response, cardiovascular drift and research-design evaluation.
Where these marks are usually lost
| Mistake | What it looks like | What it costs | Instead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data question without figures | It increased | Quote means and standard deviations | cite figures |
| Ignoring SD overlap | Declaring significance at once | Overlap means it may not be significant | check overlap |
| Physiology without equations | Heart rate rises only | Quote Q = HR x SV and substitute | equation plus substitution |
| One-sided extended response | Strengths only | Both sides plus factors | both sides plus reasons |
How to use this paper
First drill: the full 1 h 15 min (25 min Section A, 45 min Section B) with a calculator.
Mark it: check for quoted figures, use of standard deviation, stated equations and two-sided extended answers.
Second drill: redo three to seven days later, aiming to finish inside an hour.
What should I do after drilling this paper?
Direct answer: log answers missing figures, equations or balance; redo in three to seven days; and drill the Paper 3 options.
FAQ
Is this an IB past paper?
No. The questions and data are TutorZone teaching samples, not IB past papers, marking references or IB publications.
What is in IB Sports Science Paper 2?
SL 1 h 15 min, 50 marks, 35%: a Section A data question plus Section B extended response (one from three).
How do I read a p-value?
p < 0.05 means the difference is statistically significant - you reject the null hypothesis and attribute the change to the training method rather than chance.
