Paper 3 (Theory, Core) Short-answer and structured, 80 marks 50% 1 h 15 min

IGCSE Chemistry Paper 1 drilling technique: 40 questions in 45 minutes is about 68 s each. Key facts: atomic number = protons, neutrons = mass number – protons; acids pH below 7, alkalis above 7; air is 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen.

02

How this paper was built

This is a TutorZone original drilling mock: the questions follow the Cambridge 0620 structure (Paper 1 Core, 40 marks, 30%) and the answers are our own, not Cambridge past papers or marking references.

Every numeric answer was recomputed programmatically.

Note before you start: this is not a Cambridge past paper. Your score is a practice score and cannot be converted into an IGCSE grade.

Pacing

Section Marks Suggested time What to do first
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice, Core) 30% about 68 s per question core content only
Paper 3 (Theory, Core) 50% about 9 min per question core content

How many neutrons are in sodium (mass number 23)?

Direct answer: 12 (neutrons = mass number – atomic number = 23 – 11).

04

Paper 1: core concept drilling (6 demonstrated)

Separate atomic number from neutrons; know the pH ranges.

Question 1 (7 marks)

State how particles are arranged in the three states of matter.

Question 2 (7 marks)

Sodium (Na) has atomic number 11 and mass number 23. Find its protons and neutrons.

Question 3 (7 marks)

Explain the difference between a combination and a decomposition reaction.

Question 4 (6 marks)

Explain the pH ranges of acidic and alkaline solutions.

Question 5 (7 marks)

Explain how the reactivity series predicts metal reactions with water.

Question 6 (6 marks)

Name the two main gases in air and their approximate proportions.

What are the pH ranges of acids and alkalis?

Direct answer: acids below pH 7; alkalis above pH 7; neutral is 7.

05

Paper 1 answers

Question 1

Solid: closely packed and regular, only vibrating (2.5). Liquid: close but able to slide (2.5). Gas: far apart, moving freely and fast (2).

Question 2

Protons = atomic number = 11 (3.5); neutrons = 23 – 11 = 12 (3.5).

Question 3

A combination reaction joins two or more substances into one (3.5); a decomposition reaction breaks one substance into two or more (3.5).

Question 4

Acids have pH below 7 (lower is stronger) (3); alkalis have pH above 7 (higher is stronger); neutral is 7 (3).

Question 5

Higher in the series means a more vigorous reaction with water (potassium, sodium); lower metals need acid or heat (iron, copper) (7).

Question 6

Nitrogen about 78% (3); oxygen about 21% (3).

Which topics does this paper drill?

Direct answer: states of matter, atomic structure, reaction types, pH, the reactivity series and air composition.

06

Where these marks are usually lost

Mistake What it looks like What it costs Instead
Neutrons as protons Neutrons = 11 Neutrons = mass – protons = 12 12
pH reversed Acids above 7 Acids below 7 pH < 7
Air proportions Oxygen 78% Nitrogen 78%, oxygen 21% nitrogen 78%
07

How to use this paper

First drill: the full 45 minutes at the 40-question pace (this mock demonstrates 6 core items).

Mark it: check atomic structure and pH.

Second drill: redo three to seven days later, aiming for a faster finish.

What should I do after drilling this paper?

Direct answer: log neutron or pH errors; redo in three to seven days; and drill Paper 2 (Extended).
